The NSA and Princess Di (was Clinton spying on her for a date?)

A Brit newspaper is reporting that the US "secret services" -- presumably the CIA and NSA -- were spying on Princess Diana, bugging her telephone conversations in the summer of 1997, up to and including the day she died. But why would anyone bother? The British royals aren't much involved in politics or matters of national security.

There's only one reason I can think of. Was Clinton wanting to get the lowdown on her before asking for a date? I am pursuing other information from experts, trusted sources, and the usual suspects

It's more garbage for the tabloids to sell, plain and simple. If anyone thinks that there's an analytical team at the NSA that would spend more than 30 seconds considering whether or not to wiretap Princess Di before calling bull$#^% is hallucinating. It's the stuff of bad television.

Actually, IIRC, somewhere Di admitted to Bubba hitting on her, declaring that she was "very naughty" with the sitting Prez.

It may be that someone felt all Bubba's gals had to be watched for security reasons at one point or another. If Di was taking up with Dodi and so on, maybe someone was wondering what pillow talk / flirt blather was going from Bubba to a gal to her next BF.

Remember Bubba on the phone with a congresscritter about the Kosovo war all the while Monica was doing her thing?

This speculation made possible by Bubba's icky pattern of conduct.

Clinton spied on all high profile people, and got information on their private lives for fun and/or blackmail. Remember when he announced, with great sorrow, that Bob Hope died, only to find out that he had not? That exposed what he was doing. He was looking to be "President Daddy", to be the first one to console us when someone died, to tell us bad or good news, and to hold to his vest who was banging who. One by one, they went soft on Clinton during the 90s--GHWB, Orrin Hatch, Linseed Graham, Bob Dole, Newt, Trent Lott, and....titans of industry, too. Think he couldn't ask GM or Morgan Stanley for favors when he wanted them? And don't forget the IRS audits.

With Princess Di, he was probably looking to find out who she was doing, for gossip's sake, and perhaps for future reference in case he ever wanted to dump the witch and start an Anglo-US leftist alliance.

I suspect that DI had a number of chats per month with people who were regularly wanted in the US for tax evasion and fraud. She probably never realized the characters she was hanging around and just became a big target. When you look at Cat Stevens today in the UK...he is a Muslim who probably hasn't done anyone any wrong...but his association with various shady characters...especially in the charity world...makes him a great target to spy upon.

I suspect you are right, although I'm not sure that NSA was looking for tax cheats. If I recall correctly, she was hanging out with royals from the Middle East who we may have been keeping tabs on and that's how she ended up on a recorded line.

There is also the possibility that Clintoon was doing Chuck a favor because Chuck didn't want to use his own spook agencies out of fear that someone might tip off extremely popular Princess Di.

And there's the possibility that Clintoon didn't even know at the time that she was being tapped.

It is a myth that Clinton would finish himself in the sink. No one, especially the President, would do that--it would take away from the rush he gets from establishing his power. It's why he's a philanderer--a deep part of his psychology.

No, what happened was, he lied about banging Monica. Said he didn't have "sex" with her. Then, had to come up with a plausible lie for how he didn't have sex with her, yet left behind his "presidue".

So, they spent months on this. First, convince the nation that oral sex isn't sex. Then, get people to speak to Monica so she gets her story straight. They did that, and, as they are brilliant criminals, they knew that it would be "swallowed" more easily if it was an embarassing story that came out. So, they came up with this "sink" story, and "voila" we get the Sinkmaster.

But it was never true. The truth is that he banged Monica and dozens of women in the white house, including a yound intern, and lied his ass off about it in a sexual harassment suit. Clinton' propaganda machine gave us teenage girls thinking it was ok to give head now. They were, and are, very very good at propaganda. So, the lesson for today is.....get ready for a helluva fight for this nation's future in 2008.
