An attempted terrorist attack in Britain over the Christmas period is "highly likely", the Home Secretary said today.
John Reid said that around 30 conspiracies were under preparation, and the current threat level was "very high indeed".
He told GMTV Sunday that he did not think it an attack was inevitable, but that "the terrorists only have to get through once, as they did on July 7, for us to see the terrible carnage that it causes".
"Our security services have to be successful on every occasion to prevent that happening," he said.
"I try to walk the tightrope between being truthful and honest about the threat to the public but, on the other hand, to say we are doing everything possible to combat it and to try to keep our lifestyle as near as possible to the British way of life."
The Home Secretary added that he thought the battle against Islamic terrorism was likely to last longer than a generation.
Mr Reid's comments echo statements made by last month by Tony Blair and Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, the head of MI5, about the rising threat posed by Muslim fundamentalist terrorists. Mr Blair warned that Britain faced a "long and deep struggle" to defeat al-Qa'eda.
The official terror assessment, posted on the Government's Intelligence website, currently rates the threat as "severe" - the second highest level.
"We ought to be very grateful to the people in the security services who work night and day to try to protect us," Mr Reid said.
"We can never guarantee that we will get 100 per cent success but we do get 100 per cent effort from the security services."
#25, Yup!
They want to kill as many as possible in one fell swoop.
Thanks, n&v. I use 'leftists' as an abbreviation for all those confiscatorial? 'progressive' types.
There was actually a website (hoax, but believable) called "Californians for a better Texas." Or smoke free or some such nonsense.
I just wanted to clarify it a bit.
I had thought of those things (although I wasnt aware that rent control was widespread in Calf).
But I did not think that those fleeing Calf would look at it that way.
High taxes and high prices is a kind of soft repression that makes one seek lower prices and lower taxes elsewhere. It is not usually thought of as a repressive government. And in a certain realistic way of thinking about it is not because the voter chose the government and in effect chose high taxes.
Unfortunately for you in Texas as you say those fleeing California are not intelligent enough to think through why they left Calf and are voting for the same type of individual in Texas as they voted for in Calf.
As a result eventually they will have the same sort of high taxing government in Texas as the had in their former state.
"Obviously you are not the one preparing Christmas dinner in the roaddog house!"
Quite the contrary - I'll be preparing Roast Duckling, Wild rice in Cream with Saute'd mushrooms, Red Cabbage, Creamed Spinich with Pecan pie for desert.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Thank you for the info in your post.
The question is: Is the media so f*king stupid that they are defending islam on their own? Or are they being paid to do it?
God DAMN the media. I hope they are the first to die if another attack takes place. (Rant off)
I understand the rant...(it's my home town...born elsewhere but moved to Rockford at 4 yrs old...same difference).
I don't want anyone to die...but I want the media to see the effects of their actions.
Ah, the pitbull mentality of our British FRiends! I love it! Sic 'em, Ivan! :)

Which country will accept American-born Muslims that we don't wish to have around any longer? For example, if the U.S. government didn't like something I was doing, they couldn't very well return me to Sweden just because my great-grandparents came from there. We can only deport people who have just come here themselves. It's too bad because I generally agree with your whole list of items.

You're right, of course. But I get so angry when I see these subhuman bastards threatening your beautiful homeland.
I spent two and 1/2 years in Europe, and my favorite city was London. The people were nice and (despite what some of my compatriots think) the food was excellent.
Stay safe!!!
I don't think we will ban Christmas, but only because it is a giant retail money maker. Otherwise I would agree with you.
Then banish them to an island somewhere where they can't get off and they will be the only inhabitants.
Air drop food and medical supplies.
If there are no physicians among them, tough.
After all, they love death while we love life.
That's their stated philosophy.
Call them on it.
.
I never hated anyone/anything until them.
