An attempted terrorist attack in Britain over the Christmas period is "highly likely", the Home Secretary said today.
John Reid said that around 30 conspiracies were under preparation, and the current threat level was "very high indeed".
He told GMTV Sunday that he did not think it an attack was inevitable, but that "the terrorists only have to get through once, as they did on July 7, for us to see the terrible carnage that it causes".
"Our security services have to be successful on every occasion to prevent that happening," he said.
"I try to walk the tightrope between being truthful and honest about the threat to the public but, on the other hand, to say we are doing everything possible to combat it and to try to keep our lifestyle as near as possible to the British way of life."
The Home Secretary added that he thought the battle against Islamic terrorism was likely to last longer than a generation.
Mr Reid's comments echo statements made by last month by Tony Blair and Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, the head of MI5, about the rising threat posed by Muslim fundamentalist terrorists. Mr Blair warned that Britain faced a "long and deep struggle" to defeat al-Qa'eda.
The official terror assessment, posted on the Government's Intelligence website, currently rates the threat as "severe" - the second highest level.
"We ought to be very grateful to the people in the security services who work night and day to try to protect us," Mr Reid said.
"We can never guarantee that we will get 100 per cent success but we do get 100 per cent effort from the security services."

Ping!
Well there you have it then. Nothing to worry about. We're safe as houses.
Merry Christmas to you and yours Ivan.
L
The next major attack/attacks will come when we least expect them!
It's going to take a damn sight longer than that because of the intentional obstruction and political distraction of the left and their media puppets.
If governments had stood firm TOGETHER in their efforts and resolve we'd be a lot further along in defeating these animals. If the media were honest with the public we'd all be a whole lot safer, INCLUDING THE MEDIA AND THEIR FAMILIES.
Partisan twits.
A terrorist attack on Christmas? That will pretty much make every terroris- hiding Mosque in Iraq open for target practice.
I don't know. After the media's fade-to-black on the images of 9/11, it is likely they will simply blame such an attack on us for 'pushing' Christmas on those with other 'world views'.
Of course, they're called "credit card bills". ; )
It really amazes me.
The parents flee to Brittan to escape tyranny. They get their refugee status and live in freedom and security.
They raise their children to be good Muslims like them.
And what happens their kids try to turn Brittan in to one of the He!! Holes that their parents ran from.
Humanity baffles me.
Enough is enough.
.
Amen.
It's also likely here in the USA, and the media will blame it on Bush, Iraq, poverty, or find other excuses, then go ahead and give special priviliges to the members of the ideology that perpetrated the attack.
Ivan, now you just stay home for the next month.
Regards, Ivan
It makes you wonder what some of those businesses that ban people in uniforms from entering their establishment, would think if, God forbid, an attack would happen in their city.
Wait a sec . . . . shouldn't that be holiday terror attack . . . or winter solstice terror attack?
Their editor is slipping.
I don't know. If a small attack, a shopping center bombing or something, the media can continue as usual.
But a big attack,,the media might suddenly have to feel the rage of a lot of people.
It is easy to be soft on criminals and lunatics when they aren't in your neighborhood. We have been fortunate for the last five years. That is why the pc is running amok. But an actual attack might change that.
maybe I am just hoping that we would rise to the occasion and kick some butt.
