ORLANDO, Fla. -- A homeless man tried to set himself on fire to protest the city's treatment of the homeless population, but was thwarted by bystanders before he could go through with it, police said.
The man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and placed in protective custody under the state's Baker Act, which allows authorities to commit people for up to 36 hours for psychological evaluations if they appear to be a danger to themselves or others.
The suicide attempt Friday happened during Project Homeless Connect, an event that provided food, health care and other social services to about 600 people.
The man shouted criticism of the city's policies on the homeless and poured gasoline over his head, said Sgt. Barbara Jones, a police spokeswoman. He was tackled by others before he could ignite himself.
The protest took place with a backdrop of public battles between city officials and social-advocacy groups over the rights of the homeless. City employees razed a downtown homeless encampment last month, and the Central Florida American Civil Liberties Union filed suit earlier this year after an ordinance that bans feeding the homeless in downtown parks without a special permit was put into effect.
Local ACLU Chairman George Crossley said the man had lived at the razed encampment and had run out of his diabetes medication at the time of the suicide attempt.

A try to roast oneself should do it.
That'll learn 'em, dern 'em.
Let's hope this becomes a mass trend among lefties.
Bush's fault!

Note to lurkers and trolls: Setting your self on fire will end all wars and poverty forever.

This is quite the hot trend we're seeing lately.

Everytime I read about someone setting themselves on fire, I laugh becuase I think of that M.A.S.H. episode where clinger sets out to protest something by threatening to set himself on fire. He meant to use a gas can filled with water. But to teach him a lesson, someone puts gasoline in his gas can. He then has a major fit when he pours it on himself and realizes it isn't water. He yells "who put gasoline in my gasoline?!?! Everyone stay back! Get away from me with those matches!"
What burns me about this is how certain lefties exploit obvious mental illness by making a saint and martyr out of that poor chap who cooked himself to "protest the war" a while back.
Expect the same with this one.
What a nice man, volunteering to be a human campfire for the cold hungry folks under the bridge.
LMAO!
Reminds me of the joke of a man threatened to immolate himself right there on the highway if he did not collect $500.00. A firemen was relating this to everyone as traffic backed up on the freeway as he had it blocked off until his demands were met. The shocked tourist asked the firefighter who was collecting donations how much they had collected. He responded the people were quite generous and had a pledge of 300 gallons for the man so far.
300 gallons of gasoline.
But I thought there were no homeless during Democratic rule.
The problem is that we don't give them enough of what we earned ourselves to pay bills and buy things for our family.
That's the "problem".
