Jefferson Re-elected (Democrats re-elect crook)

Congressman William Jefferson has been re-elected to Congress, according to WWL-TV election analyst Greg Rigamer.

With two-thirds of the vote counted, Jefferson had a 6,000-vote lead over challenger Karen Carter.

"I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation," said City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, a Carter supporter.

Jefferson was forced into the runoff against a fellow Democrat when he failed to win 50 percent of the vote in a crowded open multiparty primary. His opponent, state Rep. Karen Carter, is seeking to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress.

Jefferson, 59, has been handicapped by a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that he took bribes – including $90,000 allegedly found in his freezer during an FBI raid -- from a company seeking lucrative contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market. He has not been charged with any crime and denies any wrongdoing.

The scandal turned the race into a debate largely divided along racial lines, an age-old dynamic in this city that has intensified since Hurricane Katrina displaced large numbers of blacks and upended their demographic and political dominance.

Whites, who overwhelmingly voted for Carter in the primary and have been her most enthusiastic financial backers, believe a Jefferson win would confirm this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina.

This is typical of all chocolates..
In Memphis they reelect convicted felons, even if after they serve time... Don't forget the mayor of Washington.

I would expect Massachusetts to vote Republican if its Democratic leaders botched the handling of a natural disaster.

What if there had been a media barrage of blame directed towards the federal government that even some conservatives place a disproportionate share of the blame on George W. Bush?

I would expect Massachusetts to vote Republican if its Democratic leaders botched the handling of a natural disaster.

Yeah but you are talking about one statewide race for Governor. The reelection of Nagin and Jefferson were local elections where the country club republicans sold themselves out to the white liberals both times to elect an uber-liberal. This probably tough for you to understand, since you don't live here, but in both the Nagin and Jefferson, election grassroots conservatives voted for the incumbents because the alternatives were ghastly. For all his foibles, Jefferson is pro-life and against gay marriage, his opponent was not.

In the statewide election for governor in 2007, I can assure you that Bobby Jindal will win. What is not being reported by the national press is that the Pubbies won two statewide offices this turn without much of a fight, Sec of State and Insurance Commissioner.

The other thing to keep in mind is that we have this awful open primary system. It insures that no one can get their message out and the two worst possible candidates always wind up in the runoff. In both the Jefferson and Nagin elections, I had no opportunity to vote for a conservative in the runoff. I did vote both times for the most conservative candidate and they won both times.

The tide is changing here, look beyond the headlines and this district will be gone by 2012 anyway, so who cares?

So he can be as corrupt and dirty as the day is long, but as long as he is slightly less pro-abortion than the other candidate, you'd prefer him?

Karen Carter is as corrupt as well. If you want to blame someone for this election, blame Alberto Gonzales for not indicting Jefferson before the election. If you were an inner city black, you would think he was being picked on, not that he did anything wrong.

In New Orleans being corrupt probably gets you more votes than it loses.

This is news? The Democrats always re-elect crooks. They've been doing it for centuries.

I think he should be appointed to head the Ethics Committee now. He certainly has met the required level of qualifications for a Democrat.

The country is marching to the hard left and doesn't even know it.

The country is majority conservative. The only way Democrats win is through deceit, fraud, MSM support, and low Republican turnout. We saw plenty of this last month.

And, the House Ethics Committee hasn't touched this, nor any other corruption for years and years, yet they went after Foley at (pardon the pun) ramming speed.
