Jefferson Re-elected (Democrats re-elect crook)

Congressman William Jefferson has been re-elected to Congress, according to WWL-TV election analyst Greg Rigamer.

With two-thirds of the vote counted, Jefferson had a 6,000-vote lead over challenger Karen Carter.

"I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation," said City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, a Carter supporter.

Jefferson was forced into the runoff against a fellow Democrat when he failed to win 50 percent of the vote in a crowded open multiparty primary. His opponent, state Rep. Karen Carter, is seeking to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress.

Jefferson, 59, has been handicapped by a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that he took bribes – including $90,000 allegedly found in his freezer during an FBI raid -- from a company seeking lucrative contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market. He has not been charged with any crime and denies any wrongdoing.

The scandal turned the race into a debate largely divided along racial lines, an age-old dynamic in this city that has intensified since Hurricane Katrina displaced large numbers of blacks and upended their demographic and political dominance.

Whites, who overwhelmingly voted for Carter in the primary and have been her most enthusiastic financial backers, believe a Jefferson win would confirm this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina.

We already are looking at a disaster. At this point Duncan Hunter is the only GOP candidate that I could support with any enthusiasm, and he may be weaker than Pat Buchanan was. The country is marching to the hard left and doesn't even know it.

Final results..... The turn out for this runoff [approx. 62,000] was about 2/3rds of the turn out for the General [approx. 94,000] when there where 13 in the race.... With the NO area reduced in population there maybe a loss of a CD in 2010 or at least a shuffling of the make up of the districts.

I would expect Massachusetts to vote Republican if its Democratic leaders botched the handling of a natural disaster. Massachusetts doesnt exercise much punishment at the ballot box for irresponsible politicians, but if things ever we're really bad, I know they would. Afterall, after Dukakis and his Democratic cronies puked on the state in the late 1980's, the Republicans had a Revolution here, which lasted until this past election.

What's next? A William Jefferson Memorial in DC? How about a national holiday to honor William Jefferson?

My burning question is......why is the federal investigation of this crook taking so long? No charges have even been filed yet.

Of course, our lackadaisical Attorney General, Gonzales, really cannot be expected to hotly pursue justice in major cases of corruption and treason in this country. He's a joke. It's disgusting and shameful.

And where is the IRS? If one of us had been caught with 90 grand in our freezer and it's unaccounted for as legitimate income, there would be no fooling around or delay. We'd immediately be given the choice of the needle or the knot if we didn't plead guilty.

Heck, our local county state's attorney would have had the investigation complete by now, the case would have been brought to trial and Jefferson already would have been breaking big rocks into little ones for some time.

Louisiana 'values' definitely in the mindset statewide; but local values absolutely in line with the past-and current-demographic info.
Expecting honest politicians elected to office in New Orleans is like expecting inmates in Angola prison to vote for Chuck Norris for warden.
The system of corruption is so deeply ingrained here that people like Jefferson are ADMIRED as folk-heroes. That money in his freezer is proof that he is a master of the system.

I'm at the point where I think NO native Louisianian should be allowed to run for office. Being a native-and definitely having a history of family politics- should disqualify you.
Maybe trading elected officials with, say, Davenport, Iowa would work.
What a joke! Prison is the next stop for Cold Cash Bill.

NJ Senator Menendez is accused of profiting by $300,000 in a taxpayer scam. He was re-elected by a large margin.

Of course, being dem means never having to be held accountable.

Let's face it, he will not be charged and he will stay in office. The truth about America is that some or more equal than others.

The big problem we have is being stuck in New Orleans!
