Jefferson Re-elected (Democrats re-elect crook)

Congressman William Jefferson has been re-elected to Congress, according to WWL-TV election analyst Greg Rigamer.

With two-thirds of the vote counted, Jefferson had a 6,000-vote lead over challenger Karen Carter.

"I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation," said City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, a Carter supporter.

Jefferson was forced into the runoff against a fellow Democrat when he failed to win 50 percent of the vote in a crowded open multiparty primary. His opponent, state Rep. Karen Carter, is seeking to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress.

Jefferson, 59, has been handicapped by a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that he took bribes – including $90,000 allegedly found in his freezer during an FBI raid -- from a company seeking lucrative contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market. He has not been charged with any crime and denies any wrongdoing.

The scandal turned the race into a debate largely divided along racial lines, an age-old dynamic in this city that has intensified since Hurricane Katrina displaced large numbers of blacks and upended their demographic and political dominance.

Whites, who overwhelmingly voted for Carter in the primary and have been her most enthusiastic financial backers, believe a Jefferson win would confirm this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina.

I'm not in his district for his election, but I'm kind of glad he was re-elected. There wasn't much choice in the 2 crooks that were running.
With the ongoing investigation on him, it would look a lot worse with him in office to be convicted and sent to jail than it would be if he wasn't in office. It would be a huge black eye on Pelosi.

If Pelosi & Co were serious about being the most ethical Congress, they would vote to refuse to seat Jefferson.

Nahhhhhhh, what was I thinking????

>>Yippee! His indictment will be a lot more entertaining.

Where the heck is it? What's holding it up?

If there was going to be one, it should have happened 2-3 months ago.

I fear MaDeuce is right.

Well, well. So will we have the spectacle of the indictment and prosectuion of a sitting congressman, or will the other crook, Mollohan, take care of both himself and Jefferson from his committee position.

The constituents who helped elect this jerk are cut from the same cloth as the voters who have elected the likes of Sharp James, John Street and Marion Barry over the years.

"I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation,..."

The nation knows that NO is a cesspool of corruption, lady. You must think the rest of us are as ignorant as NO voters.

Surely nobody is surprised by this.

&&&&

The surprise would have been if the voters actually chose the other candidate. Dems can be crooks because their motives are "pure" because they are "good guys" simply by being dems. What a great system!

"we need to hang this a-hole around pelosi's neck."

sadly, dems love it when someone "beats the system". (everyone else is corrupt so we're trying to get out just dues from the evil capitalists...)

"God, I hope the national GOP gets on this immediately.

We need to hang this a-hole around Pelosi's neck."

Problem is, the GOP seems to never take advantage of gifts like Jefferson getting reelected to advance their cause. They assume the voter is smart enough to figure it all out.
This past election should inform them that the average voter is not as intelligent as the GOP thinks he/she is.

["I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation," said City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, a Carter supporter.]

It says the obvious, the democrats are the culture of corruption, violence and racist hatefilled fools that are rising in number and power.
The people who elected Jefferson endorse corruption.

[God, I hope the national GOP gets on this immediately.

That would be completely out of character for the national GOP.]

Such a shame to watch America dying under the hand of politicians and fools who hate God, family and country.

Well, to me all of this confirms something I have been thinking of recently - i.e. there IS good and evil in the world, and the Dems are a manifestation of the latter. The only way to stop the spread of liberalism (and to defeat the muslim hoard) is prayer and faith in God.

As I recall, Speaker Hastert virtually endorsed Jefferson; maybe it was because of "traditional values." And maybe it's best for Republicans that Jefferson did win. But in New Orleans, it is very hard to topple an entrenched incumbent. Robert D.S. Novak, who had falsely predicted Talent and Allen victories, had also expected Jefferson to lose.
