Congressman William Jefferson has been re-elected to Congress, according to WWL-TV election analyst Greg Rigamer.
With two-thirds of the vote counted, Jefferson had a 6,000-vote lead over challenger Karen Carter.
"I'm a little worried about what this is going to say to the nation," said City Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, a Carter supporter.
Jefferson was forced into the runoff against a fellow Democrat when he failed to win 50 percent of the vote in a crowded open multiparty primary. His opponent, state Rep. Karen Carter, is seeking to become the first black woman from Louisiana elected to Congress.
Jefferson, 59, has been handicapped by a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that he took bribes including $90,000 allegedly found in his freezer during an FBI raid -- from a company seeking lucrative contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market. He has not been charged with any crime and denies any wrongdoing.
The scandal turned the race into a debate largely divided along racial lines, an age-old dynamic in this city that has intensified since Hurricane Katrina displaced large numbers of blacks and upended their demographic and political dominance.
Whites, who overwhelmingly voted for Carter in the primary and have been her most enthusiastic financial backers, believe a Jefferson win would confirm this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina.
Can we just call this guy "Cold Cash"?
Democrats?.... (Eddie Murphy laugh)...
LOL! Well that would be a change!
1. Fateffinchance thats gonna happen!!!
2. Fateffinchance thats gonna happen!!!
...
Willy Jefferson being an elected Dem will provide much amusement.
What happened to the "Culture of Corruption"??????
Oh yes, its the rats we are talking about, so they can do whatever, whenever, and however....right?????
WRONG!!!!!!!
You start impeaching our President rat people, you had better be ready to start impeaching your people.....and eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth....
Yes, I'm running for POTUS......
Racist, too.
So he can be as corrupt and dirty as the day is long, but as long as he is slightly less pro-abortion than the other candidate, you'd prefer him?
Negative.
The world is upside down.
This is not a blessing to the House Democrats. Rather than talking about refusing to seat Vern Buchanan, they should now be talking about refusing to seat Bill Jefferson. This is actually a real problem for them - those morally defunct people.
One last thing: the Dems have to blame themselves for this one - Karen Carter is pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion and so liberal, it's shocking she even ran. Trust the Dems to put up an unelectable Democrat like this. They have themselves to blame for this.
Traditional Louisiana values perhaps...
"Yippee! His indictment will be a lot more entertaining."
His "indictment" prospects are over. This investigation is over come Jan 20th. And the news stories of this crook are OVER!
This entire matter will fade away in the next 30 days.
"As it stands now, Carter is winning in Orleans Parish by a vote of 52-48. However she is getting trounced in Jefferson Parish (which is actually 50-50 white-black) 73-27."
I wonder if Harry Lee's coming out against Carter, heavily influenced voters?
I appreciate your post, thanks. What's outrageous from the start of course, is that Jefferson wasn't made to step down immediately following the discovery of the $$ in the freezer.
But then we are talking Democrats here....
a Jefferson win would confirm this city's image as corrupt and untrustworthy as it asks the nation to fund its recovery from Katrina.
Gee, ya think?
And the politicos from Lousiana want us to spend 250 billion to rebuild this corrupt swanp?
"It is inconceivable that he loses."
No it's not. Stranger things have happened in Louisiana.
