Bolton's successor (Zalmay Khalilzad)
December 9, 2006 ^ | 12-9-06 | Robert D. Novak

WASHINGTON -- Zalmay Khalilzad, who was announced this week as leaving as U.S. ambassador to Iraq, is the leading prospect to replace John Bolton as envoy to the United Nations.

President Bush was reported by aides as looking for someone who approximates Bolton's combination of toughness and diplomatic skill and has tentatively decided on Khalilzad. A native of Afghanistan, he has served in government posts dating back to 1985 and is the highest-ranking Muslim in the Bush administration.

Speculation on a new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to succeed John Bolton is focusing on the current U.S. ambassador in Iraq, Khalilzad, and a former U.S. deputy ambassador at the U.N., Richard Williamson. A footnote: State Department sources have said Andrew Card, who on April 14 finished five years as White House chief of staff, was interested in the UN post and was a dark horse to get it. However, he never made any such desire known to the president and is not being considered for the UN.

FR should be embarrassed to have some of these posts on this thread. Sad and pathetic at the ignorance and racism here.

Not really, IMO.

Before we get to 100 replies, the kneejerkers will be saying mea culpa. That's what's so good about this forum.

Why do you think they have never heard about him. He is in the news all the time for being our ambassador to Iraq. The arrogance of some people on this forum is worst than the left wing liberals for thinking that the "regular people" are stupid and uninformed. Your arguments are so weak that it is embarrassing to even debate you.

You all trust Jveritas to translate the captured Iraqi documents and praise his patriotism for doing it but when he is informed on Kahlilzad, respects him and trusts him, like I do, to be our rep at the UN, some of you act like a bunch of jackasses. I expect that from the donkeys but not from my fellow GOP.

The key question is what changed? Did he have an Epiphany?

I don't know. I'm reading up on him as we speak.

It is no more racist to question this man's appropriateness for the job than it is to profile Arabs and Muslims at airports. I live in the real world. If he's right for the job his experience will reveal that.

That's a ridiculous thing to say, IMO.

I see absolutely nothing in his past that would indicate a subjugation of his countries interests to that of his religious beliefs.

What kind of a so-called Muslim would put our Infidel interests above those of Allah?

The best we can hope for is Zalmay Khalilzad is a traitor to his religion. - tom

No, it's not, because Islam is not a race. It is a stupid thing to say though.

He has been serving republican administration for 20 plus years, including Reagan. I think he has earned my trust.

I discounted it as tripe.

That is your prerogative.

It is better than just sticking one's head in the sand, as that causes one's ears to fill up with sand.

If he's vocally pro-Israel, then he's exactly who we want for the job. More than any other ambassador, he has to reject the antisemitism, no matter how subtly expressed, from the UN.

This thread is a really sad display.

One would think people who claim to be conservative wouldn't be making comments like we see on this thread.

My personal favorite is the asinine suggestion that Muslims should be disqualified from public office on the basis of their religion.

I guess the Constitution doesn't mean a lot of some here on FR.
