WASHINGTON -- Zalmay Khalilzad, who was announced this week as leaving as U.S. ambassador to Iraq, is the leading prospect to replace John Bolton as envoy to the United Nations.
President Bush was reported by aides as looking for someone who approximates Bolton's combination of toughness and diplomatic skill and has tentatively decided on Khalilzad. A native of Afghanistan, he has served in government posts dating back to 1985 and is the highest-ranking Muslim in the Bush administration.
Speculation on a new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to succeed John Bolton is focusing on the current U.S. ambassador in Iraq, Khalilzad, and a former U.S. deputy ambassador at the U.N., Richard Williamson. A footnote: State Department sources have said Andrew Card, who on April 14 finished five years as White House chief of staff, was interested in the UN post and was a dark horse to get it. However, he never made any such desire known to the president and is not being considered for the UN.

I am disgusted from some of the posts here. Do you all want to be the party of "whites only"? Get out your white hoods then and light your torches. Do you want to forever be known as racists? Do you want the GOP to be an irrelevant minority party forever? There are plenty of loyal honest Americans that are staunch conservatives that are non-white!
Zalmay Khalilzad has been an excellent representative of the Bush administration in the middle east. If we or Israel has to attack Iran or Syria in the next two years, I for one would like him at the UN to slap down any Islamist Muslim nations and the EU that object. Some here on FR are starting to look like a bunch of uninformed ignorant racists that give the GOP a bad name.

Don't be so angry that many of us don't know too much about this guy. Give us a chance find out. Many on here are agreeing with you that he may be a good choice for UN ambassador.
To: veronica
Decent choice, in my view.

Second that.
Zalmay Khalilzad is a good guy and, in my opinion, would make a fine UN Ambassador for the United States. He did really good job over many years on many assignments. The Left hates him, though, mostly for being a neocon (in their view every muslim should play for team Anti-America).

Do you think all the families who lost loved ones on 9-11, all the cops, firefghters who were at Ground Zero, have heard of Zalmay Khalilzad? If they haven't, does that mean they have no right to "spew," as you put it, about the WOT?? Would you express that to them to their faces?

Agree 100% jrooney.
If all muslims in this world are as 1% as loving to the US as Kahlilzad is, the world would have been a much better place. I cannot believe how stupid some people are to doubt the patriotism of this good man Khalilzad.

He worked with the Taliban to resist the Russian incursion into Afghanistan at, mind you, Reagans request.
IIRC, some guy by the name of Obama bin Laden was also 'hired' by US to help resist the Russian incursion into Afghanistan.

FR should be embarrassed to have some of these posts on this thread. Sad and pathetic at the ignorance and racism here.

At one time he supported the Taliban. The key question is what changed? Did he have an Epiphany? If so, fine by me.
Or did he just shut up and go under cover. If so, I have a real problem here...

If they haven't, does that mean they have no right to "spew," as you put it, about the WOT?? Would you express that to them to their faces? After 5 year since 9/11, anyone on FR who hasn't heard or read of Khalilzad should not be posting.
