A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.
According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.
The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.
Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.
Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.
"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.
The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.
"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.
he also wanted to stab Jews.
Today on the bus, a crazy black man was going on about Masons, Jews & Whites- he started when I sat across from him. Must have weighed 300 lbs. A VERY pleasant ride...
I live a relativily short distance from Rockford. This should serve notice to everyone here in the Midwest and in other supposedly 'safe' regions of the country that these inhuman bloodthirsty devils can strike ANYWHERE, and is yet another reason for all of us to remain vigilant.
You were not kidding: "I probably would have eventually ended up stabbing the shit outta some Jews or something. Just stabbing them n-----s with a steak knife...Because during that war with Hezbollah, man, I had already started to look at synagogues out here...I was doing MapQuest."
I live in Pittsburgh, PA, a dying city - we have had some here - creepy Pakistani guy down the street selling untaxed cigs (goodness knows where the money went), a radical national magazine published here for a decade, Iraqis (before 9/11) came here to get fake HazMat licenses... Anywhere and everywhere can be a target.
I go to Rockford to shop all the time. Can't believe this.
Sick man.
Wanna bet this pos converted in prison?
I prefer the Israeli form of protecting schools. On the up side, teachers and parents are allowed to be armed in school in my state. Your support or desire are not a factor when lunatics are trying to kill me and my family.
Couldn't be "our man" who is 22 years old and be a Master Sgt...that would take you 15-20 year in the service.
Stop the presses! He used the "N-word?" Get a rope!
Seriously? I haven't watch the "big three" new casts in years. They actually are still hitting the Foley story?
Why? Isn't the shopping very good? ;)
A mall full of thousands of people blowing up...nada....
Some perv Congressman's emails...big time!

Well, the wife went to Cherryvale last night and said on return that the place was packed. Apparently, this POS had little or no affect on Holiday shopping.
Around the end of October (I think) we had bomb threats to our schools here in Rochelle. All schools (including ours at St. Paul) were closed on a Monday, were in lockdown the next day, and had police presence in each for a few following days. I've not heard anything further about this. Now I wonder whether this POS had anything to do with those threats.
Talib Abu Salam Ibn, Yeah....that sure sounds like a Derek to me!
