A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.
According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.
The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.
Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.
Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.
"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month …You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying…I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.
The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.
"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.

Plot Involved Grenades At Rockford Shopping Mall(CBS) CHICAGO A 22-year-old Rockford man with an ambition to become a terrorist has been arrested by federal authorities on allegations that he planned to set off grenades in garbage cans in a mall in Rockford.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, was arrested on Wednesday by FBI agents from the Chicago Joint Terrorism Task Force, the U.S. Attorney's office said.
He was apprehended after meeting with an undercover agent in a Rockford store parking lot to trade a set of stereo speaksers for four hand grenades and a handgun, the U.S. Attorney's office said.
Shareef was charged with one count of count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, authorities said.
Shareef allegedly planned to set off the grenades at the CherryVale Shopping Mall, near Interstate 90 and Interstate 39 on Rockford's east side. The mall has about 130 retail stores and is owned byy a Tennessee-based company, authorities said.
Authorities reported that the mall was one of several potential targets Shareef allegedly discussed with undercover agents, and the others were primarily local government facilities.
Earlier information said the case was connected to a terrorist plot against a Chicago mall, but that turned out not to be correct.
Federal authorities said the public was not in danger.
“Once the threat Shareef posed was detected by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, his activities and movements were under constant surveillance and there was no imminent risk to the public,” said FBI Special-Agent-in-Charge Robert Grant.
“While these are very serious charges, at no time was the public in any imminent peril as a result of the defendant’s activities,” added U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald.
An individual close to the investigation, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because charges have not been filed thus far, said there was no specific threat.
The man arrestred Friday is considered a lone operator without ties to any known terrorist organization, law enforcement sources said.
He has an appearance in Chicago's federal court at 1 p.m.

I like MediaMole's muse, alot, but seriously, FBI puts most resources on lone wolf types. Lone Wolf targeting even had its own legislation: Section 6001 of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004.
The FBI specifically identified the "lone wolf" as the most likely type of Islamist terrorist attacker here in the US.

The more likely scenario, and the reason they do not do it, is because too many Americans are armed and the outcome would probably quickly lead to (after several "events") some kind of open season on anyone suspected of being remotely affiliated with such groups.
I'll always remember how things in this country had pretty much come back to normal after the insanity of the late sixties and seventies when Clinton was elected and in no time at all we had the first WTC bombing and Waco. It was like the doors to the asylum had sprung open when the rats got back in the WH and a thousand Charles Mansons had come creeping out.
