R.I.P. I just heard the news that Jeane Kirkpatrick passed away last night. More to follow, I'm sure.
After the political departure of Rumsfeld and Bolton, my immediate visceral reaction to reading this news was a sense of a terrible omen.
SAD! RIP Jeanne Kirkpatrick!
Godspeed to Ambassador Kirkpatrick. She was a true patriot and a hero of the Cold War.
> She wasn't the only one. There could have been a face-saving handover of that sheep infested rock. <
May one thus infer that in regard to the Falklands matter, you took the side of Mrs. Kirkpatrick and General Galtieri?
Perhaps there were valid reasons for Kirkpatrick's anti-Thatcher stance. But IMO there's no good reason to argue that issue at this late date. So I'm content to respect your opinion and let the sleeping dog continue his snooze.
But at a minimum, if I'm forced to choose one lady or the other, then my vote's gotta go to Thatcher.
[And BTW, the Falklands aren't "that" rock. They are plural -- "those" rocks, if you will.]
Just a reminder: If Hillary wasn't married(???) to Bubba, we'd all be going "Hillary who??"
I find that most all confident, intelligent, articulate women are attractive.
One of the best, if not the best, ambassadors to the U.N.
> I wouldn't call it invasion, but rather a military act to drive out the invaders <
Thanks. I stand corrected. Mea culpa. I should have used a less perjorative terminology, like "Thatcher's retaking the Falklands."
I had the privelege of being part of a lunch with Ambassador Kirkpatrick at my graduate school in 1992. She was a gracious and charming guest (and kind to answer the questions of a 24 year old know nothing!).
RIP. We will never see the like again...
She was a woman who made a difference. Good-bye Madam Ambassador. You will never be forgotten. My condolences to her family.
Except, of course, that she supported the Argy side in the Falklands War.
Though she supported them for a very Thatcheresque reason: Argentina was a opponent of the Castro regime and she believed we should support the interests of anti-Communist governments in South America.
She believed it was wrong for the US to publicly take sides in the conflict since she knew that the UK would still support US anti-Soviet policy in Europe even if the US did not publicly support the Falklands intervention, while she was worried that if the US publicly came out against Argentina it would destabilize the anti-Communist regime in Argentina.
And she was correct - 18 months after the US declared its public support for the UK against the Argentine invasion, the Socialists were in charge in Buenos Aires.
My sentiments exactly, and I said so then
One Great American, RIP
See post 93.
When George H. W. Bush said that we would be surprised by who he named as his VP running mate in 1988 I crossed my fingers and hoped that he meant Jeanne Kirkpatrick. I think she would have made a great Vice President and would have set the right tone for continuing the Reagan legacy, particularly in international relations. Needless to say I was disappointed the way it turned out.
One of my favorite fantasy images involving the possibility of her being the VP candidate was the idea of the NAGs (as Rush calls the National Organization of Women feminazis) going through whip saw gyrations
"It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!..."
"It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!..."
"It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!..."
"It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!..."
"It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!...""It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!..."
"It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!..."
"It's a woman! .... It's the wrong woman!..."
She will be missed, but she will be remembered.
"In the mold of Maggie Thatcher......... Not many women of this caliber. RIP"
It bears repeating!
She was wrong regarding the Balkans.
Jeane Kirkpatrick reminded me of my mother. A lot.
