Rudy's A Down-Hil Racer In Prez Poll (Marist Poll)
NY Daily News ^ | 12/08/06

Posted on 12/08/2006 5:19:56 AM PST by areafiftyone

Hillary may have the buzz, but Rudy has the better poll numbers - at least for now.

A new WNBC/Marist College survey yesterday found that while Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) is the most popular presidential option among Democrats, a whopping 47% of all voters say they would "definitely not" vote for the former First Lady if she runs for President in 2008.

By contrast, a full two-thirds of voters say they remain open to voting for former Mayor Rudy Giuliani - who would best Clinton, 49% to 43%, if the 2008 race were held today.

The numbers suggest that the Republican Giuliani - whose pre-9/11 record remains a blank to most voters - has room to grow, while Clinton begins with nearly half the electorate aligned against her, experts said.

"The bottom line is that there is very little room for error in a Hillary-for-President campaign," says Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff.

Not that Giuliani is without challenges.

The poll found that while Giuliani remains the top pick among GOP voters, a full 47% of those voters - when told that Giuliani is pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights - say such issues could be a "major factor" in their eventual decision.

Aides to Giuliani declined to comment on the numbers, but Clinton pollster Mark Penn argued that Clinton has consistently proven she can expand her base of supporters.

"When she started in New York, many people said they'd never vote for her - and she just won reelection with 67% of the electorate," said Penn.

So you are using the term "prunepicker" [which I like too ... my family are avocado farmers] ...

Prunepicker is your way of being nice.

Well there is lot of difference between California and South Carolina - I can testify to that.

I like to say that "every weekend in California - I used to play golf with guys who smoked $10 cigars - in South Carolina I play golf with guys who EAT $1 cigars"

I say it with affection for the South - I went to college in Charleston South Carolina.

Southern folks are brilliant - kind - clever - long in memory - and very very patriotic... Wow what patriots they are.

GIVE IT UP...YOU'RE WRONG...with Conservatives sitting out, the turnout was historical this past election. We are just not a staunch conservative nation. Either you accept it or let us die...but don't go on whining and whining. I'm getting sick of it. And stop threatening us with your vote...we're all getting a bit tired of the tantrums here. We need to look realistically at the situation and act realistically.

You stay home at your own peril in having a seat at the table, because there will be a coalition of voters in 2008 that do support Rudy because of his leadership. A number of evangelicals I know are already supporting him as the person we need to fight the WOT without kumbaya. I live in Oklahoma, am conservative, and will support Rudy along with a lot of people I know.

I heard Rudy speak and Brownback -- give me Rudy any day of the week because he understands how important it is to all of us to take the war to the terrorists. Excuse me but social issues won't amount to a hill of beans if we are attacked and the sooner some of you realize that, the better off we will all be.

Have been through the flame wars on here where a same group of people post the same things on all threads. They are the first to hit the threads with everything from I will stay home and not vote to splitting the party to "Hillary" wouldn't be so bad, etc.

There will be a coalition in 2008 of voters who want a leader and if folks like you want to stay home, there isn't much we can do about it except to reach out to people that understand how national security triumphs every other issue. Learned that at a young age when I left a Church as a teenager because of their kumbaya stand on standing and fighting for our national security instead of rolling over and playing dead because the "communist wouldn't be so bad."

I, for one, will support whoever the nominee of our Party is but will work tirelessly in the primary to elect Rudy. There isn't a candidate in our Party that has announced they have formed an exploratory committee that isn't better than any Democrat. You talk social issues, then help get Ms. Clinton elected by staying home or any other DemocRAT that is running and you will see strict constitutionalist judges replaced by make your own law as you go along judges aka activist judges.

It is your choice to stay home and not vote but as my Dad always said --"If you don't vote in an election, then you need to keep your xxxx mouth shut" -- said it to my Uncle more than once. He fought in Europe in WWII and my grandfather was gassed in WWI and died when my Dad was five. Both men and so many others have fought and continue to fight for our right to vote and to remain a free Country. I take that right seriously and will never say I am staying home and not voting because a candidate does not meet 100% of what I want.

Prune picker is not a derogatory term.

My point was that most people from Calif. are just different from conservative voters in the South.

Having lived in both places for a long time, I can speak with a little authority.

I as a Catholic can not support a pro abortion liberal, as a live member of the NRA I can not support an anti gun rino. Both of which are reasons I can not vote for Rino Rudy. If he gets the nod I and many others will go third party.

ARRGHH...What will the President do about abortion? What did pro-life Bush do? I thought you people wanted it to go to the States, anyway. A Rino President will do just what Bush did: nothing about those two issues on a national basis. What do you think Hillary Clinton or Barak Obama will do? But if you do what you say, and a lib is elected...well..good luck...when the Islamofascists take over, you'll get half your wish...I guarantee there will be no abortions.

I'm convinced that it is impossible to reason with people who place emotion before reason.

You are so right! IMHO there should be no more free passes and no more pandering which is what has been happening. I am a fiscal, pro-defense, conservative died in the wool Repubican who will crawl over broken glass to vote. I am tired of compromising with the 'kumbaya' crowd who wants social issues front and center when we are fighting a war on terror for the survival of this Nation as we know it.

Rino Rudy is unelectable. If he wins the nomination a large number of social conservatives and Evangelicals will stay home or go third party and the rats will win. We need to find a decent conservative to run if we want to win in 2008.

Kinda reminds me of the story of the fellow who was on a train car with his much despised former wife, when the car broke loose and began careening down a mountain towards a cliff and certain death. His ex was desperately trying to apply the hand brakes to stop the rail car. This fellow had to decide whether to help with the brakes or enjoy seeing his ex get smashed for a nanosecond before he did.

AARGGHHH.. You can't even prove how many Conservatives sat it out, can you? But it's well documented how many Dems and libs showed up.

If you don't you're guaranteeing a liberal be elected. Don't you even care about the war on terror? Isn't that number one on your list of priorities? Without that, the other stuff won't matter. Why can't you understand that?
