Bloomberg sues 12 gun dealers in five states

The city sued 12 gun dealers in five states for allegedly selling weapons that were traced to crimes committed in New York.

The New York City Police Department has traced more than 300 confiscated guns sold by these dealers between 1994 and 2002, said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in announcing the lawsuit. The dealers are located in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

The lawsuit is part of the mayor's pledge to crack down on gun dealers whose weapons wind up being used to commit crimes in New York. In May, he sued 15 dealers in an effort to get illegal weapons off the streets.

Thursday's suit names Gwinnett Pawn Shop, Toccoa Pawn & Variety and Hot Shots Jewelry & Pawn in Georgia; Miller Rod & Gun in Ohio; John's Gun & Tackle Room in Pennsylvania, Coastal Pawn Shop, Dick's Pawn, Rooks Sale & Service and Trader World in South Carolina and Bob Moates Sport Shop, Franklin Rod & Gun Shop and Town & Country Pawn Shop in Virginia.

All 12 dealers named in the new suit sold a gun to a team of undercover investigators, who wore hidden cameras during a sting operation. Since May, six gun dealers have settled with New York City after they were targeted in the original suit.

Mr. Bloomberg also launched a subway ad campaign that warns riders about higher mandatory sentences for illegal gun possession. The state Legislature passed a bill raising the mandatory minimum sentence to three-and-a-half years from one year. The ads will be displayed in 2,044 subway cars, and include a photo of prison cell.

Are the gun dealers accused of violating specific gun laws, or just of selling guns that were eventually used in crimes?

My question exactly. Didn't sound like they violating anything if you go by the article.

He's not even really a Republican.

Maybe. He could also be the future of the Republican party. They certainly haven't repudiated him and even Hardened Freepers (especially Hardened Freepers!) will eventually steel themselves to vote for him because, you know, he doesn't have a (D) after his name.

He's not even really a human. Not in any meaningful sense of the term.

Indeed. They will vote for him and curse him the same day.

The latter from a trace of the original ATF 4473. Then they do a "straw purchace" that's caught on video by the private investigators, IIRC.

I don't mean he's a RINO, although he's that too. The fact is, he was registered as a Dem and changed parties SOLELY to run against another Democrat who was running. No other reason.

I'm going to sue some car dealers for selling cars to people with suspended licenses, for selling to people with DUI, and for selling vehicles to that RINO Bloomberg.

NRA, where are you? Opportunity to 'back' the Mayor's campaign with the same photo and a "Welcome to NYC -- Watch Your Step, Enjoy Your Stay" campaign.

*Sigh*. But then, if the NRA did it the picture of the cell would be very small and the picture of Wayne LaPierre would be very big.

Shouldn't the private investigators and Bloomberg be prosecuted for committing a crime in making a straw purchase?

Didn't Congress shield the gun industry from lawsuits like this last year?

As my old Boy Scout camp firearms instructor said to those shooters who couldn't hit the targets, "it's not the gun, it's the nut behind the butt" that misses the target.

Yep, it's those evil gun dealers hundreds or thousands of miles away from NYC that are responsible for the NYC gun crimes, it couldn't possibly be all those "good youts" in NYC that are actually raping, robbing and pulling the triggers on those guns.

Why isn't he suing the auto and bus makers of Detroit for all the auto and bus crashes and deaths? They sold the cars and buses to NYC and it's citizens didn't they? Why aren't they suing the Columbian drug dealers and makers for drug OD's?

How about the beer and alcohol makers for "accidental" pregnancies?

Bloomberg can't possibly be a Republican.

I do like his financial channel though.

Isn't it against the law to sell a gun to a resident of another state? I seem to remember having some kind of a problem that way in the not too far distant past.

Let's see.

Bloomberg hates police and wants them rendered impotent.

Bloomberg hates private firearm ownership and wants it banned entirely.

So he wants all citizens to be personally defenseless, and he does not want anyone empowered to defend them.

Great.

Am I missing the 'crime' here?

No, they are trying to obtain evidence for a civil suit. Is it legal? I don't know. IIRC, Bar Barr is counter suing for one dealer in Georgia who was in the first batch that NYC attacked with lawsuits.

Bloomberg admits openly that he ran for mayor as a Republican only because it cost him far less money to campaign for the GOP nomination than it would have for the Democratic bid.

Good question. I believe the ATF is investigating. The ATF has stated that this NYC initiative has interfered with their investigations, IIRC.
