Israelis piqued by Gates nuclear "confirmation"
07 Dec 2006 13:55:55 GMT
By Dan Williams
JERUSALEM, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Robert Gates, the incoming U.S. secretary of defense, won plaudits in Washington this week for his candour on the Iraq war.
Some Israelis were less pleased, however, to hear Gates mention with equal frankness what U.S. administrations have long avoided saying in public -- that the Jewish state has the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal....

Whether or not Israel has nuclear weapons, the fact is that Israel is the only country threatened with destruction ... Israel is not threatening any country. Weapons do not fire themselves, people fire them."
To: The Westerner
Exactly. Someone should have asked Mr. Gates what he thinks the outcome would be if Israel suddenly destroyed all its nukes and told the whole world.
What an idiot.

This Gates appears to be a dunderhead. Has he been spending time with Senator Webb?

I agree with you, and the fatc that he was instantly confirmed speaks volumes against the man. Anyone the Dems are behind is probably a bit less than super-intelligent.
I dont know where Bush got the name but he should have kept it to himself and pocked a real leader.

Pakistan is part of the Middle East. What Gates said is demonstrably false.

Keep your powder dry (and all the context that implies)!
The inmates are running the asylum! Between this bozo, the irak surrender report, and the new and improved socialist congress-critters, it will fall to the rest of us (52 % of the voting country in the only "poll" that matters) to keep our traditions alive.
ruefully,
top sends

It's part of South-East Asia, but anyway it's part of the Muslim Sphere and cannot be ignored as the (currently) only Islamic country with nukes.

Looks like antisemitism is still alive and well even among top American officials.

Maybe President Bush should revisit Joshua and Judges, regarding "land for peace."

Vernacularly, it's part of the Middle East. So are Iran and Afghanistan.
Atlas of the Middle East
It's also part of the "Greater Middle East", according to George W's definition to the G8.
To: justshutupandtakeit
President Bush is careful to speak of the "greater Middle East," to include countries not historically considered part of the Middle East. Pakistan and Afghanistan are generally considered to be in South Asia, not the Middle East.

Remember the old CENTO treaty? Central Treaty Organization which succeeded the Baghdad Pact. Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, UK and US.
