...and put the snow in what to melt it?

A hole works very nicely.

I think he left the clothes behind as a trail back to his family, so that when he reached rescuers, he would be able to take them to his family.

I've got a solar shower thing that you fill with water and put in the sun. After a few hours, it can get the water up to a pretty comfortable 80 degrees or so!

Same principle would apply even if it's snowy out. I imagine if you put a quart of snow in a black plastic garbage bag, and stuck it in the light near a window in your car, it could melt it pretty good.

You may be right. My version was difficult to share.

Very true. He tried desparately to save them. That some people second guess a dead man who died under such circumstance is astounding. I pray for his soul and his family.

Tet, what do you think happened? Do you think he was feverish, or something?

Eating snow is the very worst thing a person can do when trying to survive. It lowers the body's core temperature and may also cause thermal shock internally.

The circumstances will all come out in the next few days so maybe everyone should stop all the name calling as well as all the speculation about this tragedy.

I lived in Alaska for over 20 years, flew search & rescue missions as a pilot monthly and have seen countless cases like this one. Take some time to learn all the facts before getting into a shouting match

Oh, I see.

So she would just dig a hole in, presumably, the ground.

With her bare hands.

In frozen earth.

And assuming if she were able to claw out a hole in those circumstances, what happens next?

Is the inside of the hole magically warmer than the surface of the ground?

Explain the physics.

Did they have a fire going continuously, or did they simply burn the tires and not put more fuel on it and let it go out?

Fathers have done more outrageous things to save their families. How about the two hunters who froze when they got caught in a snowstorm and died? They weren't trophy hunting. They were trying to put food on the table. Are people going to say they were wrong? There are plenty more examples of fathers sacrificing themselves to save their wife and children. Frankly I think that should be lauded and celebrated that men are still willing to do give up their lives for their women and children. I pray for his family too.

On days like today, I just try to look away; we have people trashing this man, people trashing Mary Cheney, and a bunch of old coots handing this country over to the terrorists to get some face time.

Where do all these "holier than thou" people come from?

Here in SoCal during the summer months, I carry extra water in my car just driving the freeways between work and home. Stuck on the freeway in the heat makes me very glad I carry extra water. Temps at 105 sitting in a car even with a/c thirst can come quickly. My mother taught me never to let the fuel level get below half, especially when traveling in unfamiliar areas or in bad weather. When I lived in Mass. we would put a tin can, candle, matches, extra blankets, food/water and extra clothing in the back of the car for winter supplies. Just standard procedure.

And the snippiness is just typical, Your Majesty. The Holier than Thou types come here to demonstrate their holiness (they type "prayers for the family" as if typing that was actually praying, and "condolences to the family" as if the family were reading the thread, and so on.) This makes any rational thinking impossible and offensive to the prayerful and the phony condolences carriers. Oh, well.

Prayers for the family. I was really pulling for this guy but feared the worse when I heard they had separated. Very tragic.

I think he knew he was dieing. I think he spent the last oz of energy he had in laying out the map and the clothes to help searchers recover his body for the sake of his loved ones, and yes, perhaps inform whoever found him, that there were others in his party that were stranded as well. The skirt would have implied a female.

Hard to say. The wife indicated that they burned the first tire purely as a signal.

Your idea that a solar shower is a good one, but in this case, it appears that the vehicle they were in was in a deep ravine and never saw direct sunlight. the weather was also mostly overcast as well, which is common this time of year on the Oregon coast.

There are other ways to melt snow, a common campfire, with so much wood fuel and pine needles for kindling available to them, confuses me as to why they did not consider that a possibility. If they were able to burn tires, why not wood?

Many auto parts like hub caps, air cleaner covers, etc... also make good vessels for heating water or snow.
