Just heard on CNN Headline News he was found. Rescue personal saw flashing object and found him. No word of his condition.
Have you ever tried to feed a 7 month old?
Adults find it difficult enough when stranded to melt enough snow to keep hydrated, and they don't need for it to be warm to avoid throwing it up.
Most of us have probably learned that the hard way.... I know I did, once.
And if Mapquest and other such sites were pressured to post travel advice similar to some of the comments on these threads (such as packing matches, tinder, water, food, etc.).
It sounds strange but yes. When the temperature drops and the body's temperature drops, it takes energy (heat) to melt the snow for water. Dehydration is a prime killer in winter exposure.
You really should stop now.
No. "Likely" is a term of supposition, not fact. We don't know the facts yet.
This is very sad. Thank God his wife and child were saved. Prayers for them both.
I wonder if she got that from a reality show.
I will. And in so doing I hope to learn something about what to do, and not to do, in the same situation. It's your choice as to whether or not you'll try to do the same.
I wonder if she got that from a reality show.
Mary Poppins has a reality show?
I never did hear how they found the mother and kids.
You were mad because after a week+ of no rescues, and watching his children and wife on the brink of dehydration, he made the decision to try to get help. You must be a great quarterback on Mondays...
And sticking with the vehicle.
And not necessary in this case, if reports of their being able to light a fire are correct.
And Google Earth could designate that area for current imagery..out of respect for one of their own.
This is so sad. A heroic father. Godspeed.
Exactly right. I saw a show once where a teenage kid survived overnight on a mountain (Alps in Europe), but he knew to put snow into a water bottle and melt it with his body heat before drinking it. Somehow this is very important so you don't get hypothermia. Not sure why, but it saved him.
Had taken extra clothes with him
...and put the snow in what to melt it? The water has to go somewhere. 'Course they could have used a half-burned out tire for a pot, but who thinks about that sort of thing at the time of the event?
The temperature was in the teens.
If you could actually get a 7 month old accustomed to breast milk not to throw up cold water, the cold water would likely hasten hypothermia in such a little body.
And in order to melt enough of the snow for yourself, your 4 year old and the baby, you would have to leave the baby without your body heat as you tried to collect it.
A lot of logistical difficulties.
The only way to melt the snow is your body heat, too, driving down your own temperature.
Plus a handful of snow probably yields less than a teaspoonful of water and a 7 month old probably needs at least 12-16oz daily to function.
