Some opponents were softening, but the controversial U.N. ambassador's resignation is yet another sign of the changed political landscape after Nov. 7
The resignation of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations marks another acknowledgement by the White House of the political consequences of the Nov. 7 Congressional elections.
....
Chafee, who was defeated for reelection, issued a statement reiterating his opposition. " Mr. Bolton did not demonstrate the kind of collaborative approach that I believe will be called for if we are to restore the United States ' position as the strongest country in a peaceful world," he said. "This would be an appropriate time to choose a nominee who has a proven ability to work with both sides of the political aisle, a history of building strong international relationships and a reputation of respect for the institution of the United Nations. The names Brent Scowcroft and George Mitchell come to mind immediately as outstanding candidates. " There's no word from White House yet on whom it might nominate as Bolton's replacement.

Yup. It was just as good as shark chum, wasn't it?
And she lost to Talent and it was rumored that that vote against him cost her the race. I doubt they'll make the same mistake again.
Chaffee is more powerful than Bush.
Like it or not, but Bush is too honorable to do that workaround.
I would love to know what bleephole sent this rumor to Drudge
Where we are the economy is not great.
what planet do you live on?
NW PA
NW PA
my guess is Michigan
Thankfully, Chafee is history.
Yeah losing control of the US Senate was a tough one to take. But knowing Chaffee lost reelection was worth it.
I hope the President nominates somebody who accurately reflects United Nations values.
William Jefferson (D-Louisiana) would be perfect.
:-) I'll second that.
Agreed, especially since only a complete moron could have missed that Chafee was poised to jump like Jeffords anyway, had he won. The GOP lost the Senate either way, so it's better it lost the clean way rather than the stabbed-in-the-back way.

Look they filibustered it and Chaffee refused to grant him a vote on the floor out of committee.
I think they fought very hard, but the handwriting was on the wall. I posted the following on another thread:
Bolton's leaving could be a blessing in disguise. Bolton was the only thing that gave the UN any credibility at all. Notice how relatively muted the calls were during the past year to "get US out of the UN"? That's because we at least figured there was a genuine reformer and watchdog on the premises.
With Bolton gone, the place can be viewed once again as the same old corrupt and useless laughingstock it always was. It's time to get back in the politicians' faces and demand that America dump the scumbag United Nations and send every p.o.s. in the place back to wherever they came from.
