And she lost to Talent and it was rumored that that vote against him cost her the race. I doubt they'll make the same mistake again.

Chaffee is more powerful than Bush.
To: Chode
Like it or not, but Bush is too honorable to do that workaround.

Nominating Santorum to take Bolton's place in the UN is a brilliant stroke. For similar reasons, George Allen could also be an intriguing choice, since Allen needs a way to reinvent himself after the press tarnished his luster. Having said that, I do not think either will be nominated since both have little chance to win. Although this position might just be a good convenient subterfuge if each wanted a graceful way to stay out of running in the Presidential primary circus.
Has anyone explained why President Bush could not just appoint Bolton as Under Secretary and leave the Secretary position open indefinitely? If that procedure is legal, it would be the most elegant way to deal with this new dynamic.

Thankfully, Chafee is history.

Yeah losing control of the US Senate was a tough one to take. But knowing Chaffee lost reelection was worth it.

There's no word from White House yet on whom it might nominate as Bolton's replacement.I hope the President nominates somebody who accurately reflects United Nations values.
William Jefferson (D-Louisiana) would be perfect.
To: lexington minuteman 1775
Nominate Jack Bauer. :-) I'll second that.
To: Lancey Howard
Just exactly how hard did the White House fight to keep Bolton as our ambassador to the UN

Yeah losing control of the US Senate was a tough one to take. But knowing Chaffee lost reelection was worth it.Agreed, especially since only a complete moron could have missed that Chafee was poised to jump like Jeffords anyway, had he won. The GOP lost the Senate either way, so it's better it lost the clean way rather than the stabbed-in-the-back way.

Look they filibustered it and Chaffee refused to grant him a vote on the floor out of committee.

Just exactly how hard did the White House fight to keep Bolton as our ambassador to the UNI think they fought very hard, but the handwriting was on the wall. I posted the following on another thread:
Bolton's leaving could be a blessing in disguise. Bolton was the only thing that gave the UN any credibility at all. Notice how relatively muted the calls were during the past year to "get US out of the UN"? That's because we at least figured there was a genuine reformer and watchdog on the premises.
With Bolton gone, the place can be viewed once again as the same old corrupt and useless laughingstock it always was. It's time to get back in the politicians' faces and demand that America dump the scumbag United Nations and send every p.o.s. in the place back to wherever they came from.

You can have George W. Bush and the horse he rode in on.
George Mitchell, my arse.
