Contrary to the claims of Rep. Charlie Rangel (D.-N.Y.), U.S. military recruits are not poorer and less well educated than their contemporaries. Quite the opposite is true. They tend to be better off and better educated.
In fact, as the Iraq War has continued, enlistments have declined from poorer neighborhoods, while increasing from middle-class neighborhoods.
Tim Kane, Ph.D., director of the Heritage Foundations Center for International Trade and Economics, has studied the demographic trends among recruits in periods both before and after the war. The data he collected are represented in the charts below. They show that enlistees in the U.S. military generally reflect the U.S. population as a whole, and that it is the great American middle class that forms the backbone of the U.S. military.

I agree. The military is a middle-class institution. Lower-class kids can use it to move into the middle-class. Not many upper-middle class people do, because it makes them feel out of place. Yesterday a local boy, a Ltc Kruger, age 40 . was honored. He was killed in Iraq, because he was out in the field. A man on the fast track. First class. The Army's loss, his family's loss, our loss.
I know that many young adults here went into the military. One is the son of a doctor. They all had money, upper middle class. Two are brothers. Not poor. All of these people I know who went into military were white. They graduated from high school with my kids 1999-2002. They had all kinds of reasons for enlisting. But none of the reasons were about being poor. They were all from well to do families. They are serving their nation now. Some have gone to Iraq. My future dauther-in-law's brother spent a year in Iraq. And they are not poor. Their father is a nuclear engineer and their mother is a nurse.
By "here" I mean Lake Jackson Texas. I temporarily live in Calif. but my perm. address is in Texas. My son lives in my house while I am gone. He is doing a GREAT job!
"his misinformation continues to go unchallenged...."
misinformation and liberal news programs go hand in hand.....another tautology if you will.
imho.....one must remember that liberals are not americans....they don't believe in the u.s. constitution, they don't believe in property rights, they wish to eliminate religious faith, they demand that humans worship and pay homage to their people, they want to eliminate any opposition and crave absolute power.
(so what's a little disinformation in the face of such a goal?...a la the end justifies the means)

Please don't distract Rangel with facts. He will view things through the filter of race to his dying day. It also helps his cause that he has no children of draft age. Coincidence?
More stats
First off, the military services are selective. They don't accept recruits of low mental ability. Some of our generals still remember McNamara's PROJECT 100,000, in which that many Category IV's (the lowest mental category) were accepted into service, and were found to be disasters. In the Air Force, they were kept at jobs like washing airplanes, where they couldn't do much damage. Since intelligence is to some extent inherited, that also means that those acceptable to the military services came from homes with parents of average or above average intelligence, and with high probability, average or above average incomes. Thus it shouldn't be surprising that recruits tend to come from homes that are above average in intelligence and income.
Second, it is significant that people of this caliber are volunteering for the military, despite other opportunities available to them. They may not be from the "elite," but they are from the solid middle of America, and are willing to put their lives where their mouths are. I respect them a lot more than I respect the "elite" who think they are too good to risk themselves defending the country.
Thanks. And I still say Rangel is a filth bag. He is or is close to being a pathelogical lier.
