(11/29/06 - KTRK/KATY, TX) - There's an awful lot of exciting news when you round the corner on Baker Road. One of two big yellow signs announces a new neighbor is coming soon.
"It's not an appropriate place to have a mosque or church," said resident Barbara Simpson.
It isn't going over real well.
"As a house of worship, they shouldn't be disturbing the peace and tranquility of 15 homes," said resident John Wetmore.
Neighbors tell us they're concerned about traffic and drainage and a little fear of the unknown. Some of the homeowners even offered to buy the land back for more than a million dollars. The K.I.A. doesn't seem very interested in the offers.
"We're not going anywhere," said Katy Islamic Association member Alvi Muzfar.
So it seems the community at the end of Baker Road has a pretty good fight. But this fight has gone much farther than many between two neighbors. You see in these fights, sometimes neighbors throw mud at one another. In this instance, they're wallowing in it.
Craig Baker owns pigs. He's the guy behind the second big yellow sign on Baker Road. That's the one announcing Friday night pig races.
"What does it matter, I can do whatever I want with my land right," asked landowner Craig Baker.
Sure can. But aren't pigs on the property line racing on a Friday night a little offensive to a Muslim neighbor?
"The meat of a pig is prohibited in the religion of Islam," said Katy Islamic Association member Youssof Allam. "It's looked upon as a dirty creature."
Yeah, there's that and also that Friday night is a Muslim holy day.
"That is definitely a slap in the face," said Allam..
Now before you go thinking Craig Baker is unfair, or full of hate, or somehow racist, hear him out.
Baker has long roots here. His family named the road and when the new neighbors moved in, he tells us, they asked him to move out.
"Basically that I should package up my family and my business and find a place elsewhere," said Baker. "That's ridiculous, they just bought the place one week prior and he's telling me I should think about leaving."
That new owners deny they ever said anything like that, but Baker isn't budging.
Baker admits the pigs are a message he is not leaving.
The 11-acre property is sandwiched between a pricey subdivision and Craig Baker's business.
K.I.A. eventually plans to build a mosque, a gym and a school there. There's no date for the groundbreaking ceremonies, or the first pig race.

Say, Isn't that "Allah's Little Helper" coming up on the backside?!
Let's stop calling Islam a religion and call it what it really is: a terrorist and criminal manefesto parading under the guise of "religion." If you don't agree, read Prophet of Doom by Craig Winn. "The Prophet" was a psycho murderer that his own family rejected. If 7th century Arabs were smart enough to lable him what he was (for which he later killed them in the name of "the religion of peace"), then pity us in this country for not recognizing Islam for what it is.
"Feroze said the complex will be built to serve 150 to 200 Muslim families in western Harris County. The mosque will be the first structure to be built, but the entire complex, including athletic facilities, should be finished in about five years."
"and that attendance at the largest services will probably not exceed 30 worshippers. Their Baker Road neighbors will be welcome to look at plans for the complex, they said, as the project is developed."
Now that's interesting, with 150 families they can only get 30 worshippers together. Add to that the school and athletic facilities planned and something doesn't add up.
That was great reporting, and much better than the news article.
Thanks. I think you should post that as it's own thread.
I agree. What's that verse, 'you shall know them by their fruits'
The fruit of islam is beheadings and suicide bombers.
What bothers me is the immigration...where are all these muslims coming from? I don't remember ever seeing a mosque growing up....now they're all over the place. I wouldn't care about them at all, except for 911 and all the facts that have come out since then...like their stated goal to either convert us or kill us and to use our own tolerance and laws against us to accomplish this.
I don't feel that giving a Christian religious freedom and a Muslim religious freedom are going to get the same results since Muslims are so blatently militant - many of them just seem to think their religion is a license to kill. I'm not going quietly along with this.
"See, what you're not getting is that free-will was ordained by God"
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. (Isaiah 45:7)
Yes we should pray and we must have UNITY! Whatever differences we have among Christian faiths should be accepted as differences and then stand together as brothers and sisters through Christ.I think that is what Pope Benedict was doing. It was also an example to the Muslims that one does not have to die if there is a disagreement in faith. All one has to do is look what has been to Christmas to realize we as Christians must defend our faith on all fronts. May the Holy Spirit bless this country with ZEAL for faith in Jesus. How on earth did spending lots of money be considered what Christmas is all about. I figure those very same gifts could be bought after Christmas much cheaper and we could concentrate on the true meaning of Christmas. Faith, hope, and charity is always a good beginning.
Why don't all these muslims that are so disgusted by the voilence and so called hijacking of their religion speak out? You know, I could understand them being fearful in Iran or Iraq or Saudi Arabia, but in this country they have nothing to fear. Heck, even illegal aliens protest with impunity. Sorry, but actions speak louder than words, especially words that are whispered.
"-- stated goal to either convert us or kill us and to use our own tolerance and laws against us to accomplish this. --"
See our Oath of Citizenship at post #96 above. --- It can lead us to the question:
Do american Muslims "-- absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty --"? -- And thus, -- does their belief prevent them from bearing "-- true faith and allegiance" to the US Constitution?
Before I retired, I worked at the Michoud Assembly Facility in East New Orleans, LA. We built the Space Shuttle External Tank there. A colleague of mine had a plan to fill one of those tanks (there are actually two tanks in one
assembly) with pig fat and air burst it over Baghdad. Sounded like a good plan to me.
Thank you for that additional information, Loci.

Pig fat tiki torches?
This is really funny. My ultra conservative brother just moved to Katy this week. I wonder if he had a clue before this happened.
"Whatever differences we have among Christian faiths should be accepted as differences and then stand together"
not according to scripture
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. (1 timothy 6:5)
I live in Katy too. Where is Baker Rd. North or South of I-10? Do you the subdivision they are talking about? Say it isn't sooooo!!!!
Thanks
Since you are quoting Leviticus:
11:7, And the swine, because he parteth the hoof, and is cloven-footed, but cheweth not the cud, he is unclean unto you.
