Wonderful link Cindy, thank you. My wonderful father-in-law (God rest his soul) was in WWII...and for the life of me I can not recall the exact details...I do know that he was in the South Pacific and later Australia...sent there after getting Malaria. I will be getting that info. from my mother-in-law this week-end, I want to make sure that we never forget his honorable service to our country. I do know that he received a purple heart and a bronze star. His 5 brothers also served. Amazing family.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Commuters taking NJ Transit on their way home Friday night may notice hundreds of extra police officers at 50 train stations in North Jersey.
The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, NJ Transit and other police agencies will be participating in a drill that simulates an attack on the state's transportation system.
More than 1,000 officers representing about 135 agencies and six counties will participate, said Roger Shatzkin, a spokesman for the Office of Homeland Security.
The drill is the culmination of four months of exercises within the Urban Area Security Initiative region, which on a simulated a terrorist attack at a North Jersey rail station. The region includes Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic and Union counties and the cities of Newark and Jersey City.
The drill will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and train service will not be disrupted, officials said.

No Explanation for Shore Points Shaking (NJ - 12/7/06)
December 7, 2006 - Some people felt the ground shaking Thursday afternoon in South Jersey along the shore.
Action News and local police took calls and emails from people in Mays Landing, Egg Harbor Township, Marmora, Somers Point, and Ocean City. All of them reported rumblings, tremors, and loud noises around 12:30 pm, then again at 1:15 pm.
Most of the obvious potential causes don't check out. The only major road construction in the area is along the Route 52 causeway, and that's pretty far away for all those people to feel it. The Earthquake Center in Delaware reports absolutely no activity in the region.
And the Department of Defense and New Jersey military investigated. Both say no local aircraft caused a sonic boom. But there is the possibility that an aircraft just passing through from a different area could have caused a loud rumbling feeling.

Ebola Virus kills 5,000 Gorillas (12/7/06)

An outbreak of Ebola virus in northwestern Republic of Congo has killed 5,000 gorillas, helping to push the threatened species even closer to extinction, a study says.
The estimate is made by a team of scientists in Europe and central western AFrica, who say there was a "massive die-off" of gorillas in Congo's Lossi Sanctuary park from 2002 to 2004....

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Muslim woman in Dearborn, Mich., lodged a complaint Tuesday against Fitness USA for an alleged civil rights violation involving a fellow gym patron. According to Jodi Berry, executive director of Fitness USA, Wardeh Sultan was praying in front of another member’s locker when the member wanted access to her belongings inside the locker. The inconvenienced patron tried to interrupt Ms. Sultan, but she remained prostrate in front of the locker and an altercation ensued. A manager was called into the locker room to intervene.
Ms. Sultan later complained that the Fitness USA management was unconcerned about the humiliation she suffered when her prayers were interrupted. She stated that the gym personnel were insensitive, rejected her complaints and did not satisfactorily intervene on her behalf. Ms. Sultan further reported that the manager told her, “You have to respect her (the other patron), but she does not have to respect your god.”
The incident is yet another example of special treatment Muslims are increasingly demanding nationwide. Last April, at the Lincoln Park, Mich. Fitness USA location, 200 Muslim women signed a petition demanding separate workout times for men and women, or, at minimum, installation of a divider between the men’s and women’s gym sections. A screen was eventually erected to obstruct the view of the women’s facilities. Another Fitness USA facility recently revised a dress code to allow Muslim women to wear more modest dress while exercising. "

Christian leader in Mosul kidnapped and killed

Mosul (AsiaNews) – Another leader of the local Christian community in Mosul has been kidnapped and killed: this is the second such crime in the city in less than two months. Meanwhile, from Baghdad, the Chaldean Patriarch has made an urgent appeal for the release of a priest kidnapped on 4 December in the capital, of who there is no news as yet.
Today, AsiaNews sources in Iraq confirmed the death of Elder Munthir, 69, a high-ranking leader of the Presbyterian Church in Mosul. Kidnapped on 26 November, the man’s body four days later was found with a bullet in the skull, as recently reported by the Compass Direct news agency. This is the second kidnapping of a Christian from Mosul that has ended in tragedy in as many months. On 11 October, the body of Fr Paulos Eskandar was found. Fr Eskandar was a Syro-Orthodox priest who had been kidnapped two days earlier. According to anonymous sources in Mosul, the kidnappers of Munthir had demanded a ransom of one million dollars, adding threats like: “We will kill all Christians, starting with him.”
Mosul joins Baghdad as one of the most insecure Iraqi cities for Christians to live in right now. In the Iraqi capital, the Chaldean community is anxiously awaiting news of Fr Samy Al Raiys, rector of the Major Seminary of the Patriarchate, who was kidnapped on the morning of 4 December near his home.

Three Terrorists Captured; 26 Detainees Released

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7, 2006 – Three terrorists were captured in Afghanistan yesterday, and 26 detainees were released from a Bagram facility. Earlier this week, U.S. troops provided humanitarian assistance in eastern Afghanistan.
During an operation near the village of Qasemaul Kalay, in Khowst province, Afghan and coalition forces captured three terrorists who posed a serious threat to peace and stability in Afghanistan, military officials said. No Afghan or coalition forces or Afghan civilians within the compound were harmed during the operation.
Elsewhere in Afghanistan yesterday, 26 detainees were released from the Bagram Theater Internment Facility. Officials determined the detainees no longer posed a threat to the government of Afghanistan and were turned over to Afghan government officials.
The detainees were transferred into the “Takhim-E Solh” program, also known as “Peace through Strength.” Under the Takhim-E Solh program, individuals pledge their allegiance to the Afghan government and promise not to take up arms against their nation.
While in the detention facility, all detainees received three meals a day, worship opportunities and comprehensive medical care, officials said. Coalition forces routinely evaluate each detainee’s status and, in coordination with the Afghan government, release selected detainees.
A day earlier, troops from the U.S. provincial reconstruction team at Mehtar Lam responded to three separate requests for humanitarian assistance in Laghman province, in eastern Afghanistan.
They distributed tarps, blankets, rice, beans, cooking oil, salt and tea.
The region’s director of tribal affairs, Mr. Naquibullah, requested the humanitarian aid for poor and disabled people in Laghman province, Army Lt. Col. Paul Fitzpatrick, a spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force 76, said.
“These provincial- and district-level leaders are responsive, representative and capable,” Fitzpatrick said. “They understand their responsibilities as leaders and are diligent in their efforts to bring much-needed comfort through coordination and cooperation with the international community.”
The aid mission was coordinated among Tapakal village elders and provincial council members, Mullah Abdul Ahed Ferajighani and Haji Abdul Jamil Afzalzada of Mehtar Lam village, and the U.S. civil affairs team at the Mehtar Lam PRT.

14 Insurgents Killed in Ramadi; More Insurgents Captured in Raids

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7, 2006 – Fighting in Ramadi killed a coaltion servicemember and 14 insurgents yesterday, and Iraqi and coalition forces captured other insurgents in three raids around Iraq this week.
One coalition servicemember died when insurgents in Ramadi attacked Iraqi soldiers and coalition forces yesterday with a heavy volume of small-arms fire from numerous insurgent positions, including the Haqq Mosque. Troops returned fire with a combination of small-arms fire, machine-gun fire and main tank-gun rounds, military officials said.
When the enemy's attack continued, coalition forces used tank guns and precision-guided ordnance to destroy buildings used as insurgent fighting positions. Iraqi soldiers and coalition forces did not use precision-guided ordnance or fire their main tank guns at the mosque, military officials said.
Fourteen insurgents were killed in the fighting. No further details were available on the coalition servicemember killed. Three coalition members were wounded during the operations; there were no reports of civilian casualties.
Coalition forces must defend themselves when insurgents create situations such as occurred yesterday, Marine Lt. Col. Bryan Salas, a spokesman for the coalition, said. "While we are mindful to limit damage,” Salas said, “we must respond with necessary and proportional force to protect our forces and Iraq from the insurgents."
Elsewhere in Iraq yesterday, Iraqi police forces with coalition advisors conducted a raid in Abdan, near Tal Afar. They captured an insurgent associated with al Qaeda in Iraq and detained seven suspects during the operation. Military officials said they believe the captured insurgent has supplied weapons and money to al Qaeda in Iraq and provided enemy fighters a safe house for carrying out attacks against Iraqi security forces in the Tal Afar area.
In another raid yesterday in Bayji, Iraqi soldiers with coalition advisors captured an insurgent sniper believed to be responsible for direct and indirect attacks targeting coalition forces, including improvised-explosive-device and car-bomb attacks in the area, military officials said. The insurgent sniper is associated with other insurgent cells within Iraq. Iraqi forces also detained an additional suspect during the raid.
A day earlier, special Iraqi army forces with coalition advisors captured six suspected insurgents during a raid in Yusufiyah, south of Baghdad.
Military officials believe the insurgents are responsible for kidnappings, murders and improvised-explosive-device attacks against Iraqi civilians and security forces, military officials said. Iraqi forces detained nine additional suspects during the raid.
In the three raids this week, no Iraqi or coalition forces or Iraqi civilians were killed and only minimal damage was done to the objectives, military officials said.

Portable anti-aircraft missile systems are proliferating without government control, making them available to terrorists or the mafia, a multilateral arms export control group said Dec. 7.
The Wassenaar arrangement on export controls for conventional arms and dual-use goods and technologies, comprising 40 countries, said many thousand portable missiles, so-called MANPADS, could be circulating outside official export channels.
