The setting is familiar to anyone who watches the evening news. A large, executive-style desk, a laptop perched on top, a logo in the background and a screen showing shifting images to reinforce the newsreader's message. The only difference is the presenter, who is swathed in an Arab headdress and masked to hide his identity, and the subject of the broadcast, a call for an Islamic state for Iraq and a vow to use Iraq as a launching pad to crush the "Zionists" in Israel.

Welcome to the "Voice of the Caliphate", the latest offering from the Global Islamic Media Front, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of al-Qaeda and the worldwide jihadist movement.

Distributed over the internet, the mock news format is just one of many employed by al-Qaeda's highly sophisticated propaganda arm.

Freed jihadis put Pakistan's war on terror 'back to square one', say senior officers

Anti-terrorism forces in Pakistan have been told to brace themselves for a wave of atrocities. Intelligence officials warned that the security situation is now more precarious than it was before the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

Senior officers say they are "back to square one" in their fight against international terrorist groups after the release of dozens of militants by Pakistani courts. High-ranking police officials say that as many as 80 hard-core militants are on the loose after being cleared by the courts or released on bail.

They are believed to have been involved in crimes including the attempted assassination of President Pervez Musharraf and a suicide attack on the American consulate in Karachi.

A memo sent by Pakistan's interior ministry to law enforcement agencies around the country warns of a plot to use suicide bombers to target Britons and Americans, including diplomats, in a coordinated campaign involving some of the country's most notorious terrorist groups. The ministry warned that the bombers were also believed to be looking at high-profile individuals and military installations as potential targets.

Al-Qaida's No. 2 lashes out at Abbas

The deputy leader of al-Qaida accused moderate Arab leaders of being traitors for cooperating with the United States and its allies in a taped message posted on militant Web sites Saturday.

Ayman al-Zawahri lashed out at Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah movement, saying "they cannot be brothers to the Muslims, but they are their enemies."

"Those who have sold Palestine, the secular traitors, cannot be your brothers," said al-Zawahri in the 15-minute audiotape posted on a Web site commonly used by Islamic insurgents. "Do not recognize their legitimacy. ... And don't sit with them ... and do not sign with them the documents that will make you lose Palestine."

The tape, released on Id al-Adha, the most important Islamic holiday, could not immediately be verified. But a banner posted on the Web site said it came from al-Qaida's media production house, al-Sahab.

Fearing terrorist attacks, UNIFIL raises level of alert
Dec. 31, 2006

Fearing attacks by Global Jihad and Hizbullah, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has raised its level of all alert around bases in southern Lebanon, a high-ranking officer in the multinational force told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.

According to the officer, warnings transmitted recently by the IDF regarding potential threats, were "taken seriously" and were being handled with extreme caution. The officer refused to reveal if changes had been made to security procedures in UNIFIL bases, but said that necessary measures were taken.

"This threat is serious," the high-ranking officer said, "and we are taking the necessary precautions."

Israeli embassy in Thailand warns travelers

The Israeli embassy in Bangkok issued instructions for Israelis visiting the region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that among other things the guidelines call for visitors to remain close to their hotels and avoid crowded areas.

Two people have been killed and some 30 more were wounded in a series of explosions throughout the city on Sunday. (Roee Nahmias)

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said the government would halt talks with ETA over the bombing. The group had agreed to stop attacks in its cease-fire declaration earlier this year that was seen as the greatest hope in a decade of a peaceful end to the conflict.

"The condition for dialogue was and is the unequivocal desire to abandon violence," said Zapatero, who cut short a family holiday after the bombing. "The very grave attack today by the terrorist band ETA is radically contrary to that desire."

Zapatero had insisted as recently as Friday that he was optimistic the cease-fire would lead to a permanent peace.

ETA did not claim responsibility for the bombing, but a man who placed a warning call before the attack said he was a representative of the group. Following previous attacks, the group has sometimes waited weeks to claim responsibility."

Woman bops burglar with frying pan (Montana)

WORLAND - A string of burglaries ended when a retired couple caught a 17-year-old male in their home, hit him over the head with a frying pan and forced him to flee, police said.

Four burglaries were attempted between 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. Thursday night and Friday morning, according to police.

The last of the homes robbed belonged to retired couple Deloris and Mel Mead, who were sleeping when Deloris Mead saw a light on in her living room.

"I tiptoed around and the light was on in the living room, the back door going into the garage was open wide, the basement was open wide and the garage door going into the backyard was open wide," she said. She closed and locked the basement door and awakened her husband. While the two were looking around, they heard something rattling the basement door.

Deloris Mead said her husband opened the door and a young male holding a folded hanger tried to run out.

"Mel opened the door and grabbed the kid," she said.

As her husband struggled to subdue the juvenile, Deloris Mead said she grabbed a frying pan and "bopped him over the head with it."

The juvenile fell down the stairs that led to the garage and ran to the backyard, where he jumped the fence.

Shortly after, police spotted a male with a backpack and, after a short chase, apprehended a juvenile, Sgt. Tom Brase with the Worland Police Department said.

The juvenile, whose name was not released, was being held in jail, Brase said.

We must make the connection between individual safety and a strong national defense, increase civic preparation and political responsibility, and train all Americans to become defenders of our community safety and national security.

You're NOT pessimistic - you're realistic! There are those questioning who caused 9/11 to this day. OTMs attempting to enter via Mexico just in the past week and threats coming from extremists almost daily, but noooooooooo, some will need the vacuum removed from between their eyes before they implement or even consider change.

Did you see the report of the bomb under the Bladensburg Road bridge over the Anacostia River in Oorang's post #1633? Has me on edge this evening. I remember our discussions about escape routes being shutdown/blocked just before the next large scale attack(s).

Heard unusual gunfire earlier this evening followed by many sirens. The gunfire was unusual because of it's prolonged duration, rate of fire (very heavy), and multiple directions. When the sirens started up my interest became concern so I went onto the back deck (facing east), and started looking for smoke. Seems to have been nothing because all is quiet now.
