The value of paying attention...
jewishworldreview.com:
Shlomit was driving on a main highway in Israel, on her way to a town inside the green line, to visit her married daughter and grandchildren. She found herself behind a large garbage truck, but, not being in a hurry and preferring not to pass on a busy road, she drove contentedly along behind him, listening to a CD of Devora Gila, a religious female Joan Baez-type singer. The yellow license plate on the truck in front of her indicated that it was owned by an Israeli. The cars of Palestinian drivers living under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority have white or green plates. There are, however, Arab-owned vehicles with yellow plates those belonging to Arab residents of East Jerusalem.
Shlomit noticed that other cars were flying by them, but a car with white plates remained steadfastly behind her. She was sandwiched between the two.
After a while, the garbage truck pulled over to the side of the road and Shlomit passed it. Something made her glance up at her rear view mirror, and she saw that the Palestinian car was also pulling over. Shlomit saw the driver get out and hand a small package to the driver of the garbage truck.
This, she thought the transfer of something from a white-plate to a yellow-plate driver was a little odd.
So Shlomit, being a good citizen, upon reaching a roadblock several miles up the road, told the story to a soldier manning the post.
"Would you mind sticking around for a few minutes?" he asked.
"No problem," said Shlomit and settled down with a cup of coffee kindly offered by the young man in the bulletproof vest and helmet.
A few minutes later the garbage truck rolled into the roadblock lane. Having yellow plates, it should have passed through fairly easily. But the soldiers, tipped off by Shlomit, examined his cab even more carefully than usual. They found the little package and opened it.
It contained explosives. My friend Shlomit probably saved some lives that day.

As the end of the year always occasions retrospectives, prospectives and resolutions, it might be a worthwhile exercise to consider our experiences with Iraq as a guide to what might happen with Iran, especially since Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's saber rattling has reached a fever pitch.
While comparisons to Hitler (and the world's reaction to him) are painfully trite anymore, it's hard not to notice parallels between Hitler and his apologists and Ahmadinejad and the stubborn appeasers today.
We used to review the world's response to Hitler, uniformly condemn his Neville Chamberlain appeasers and smugly assure ourselves that we would never again ignore such clear signs of malignant aggression. "Never again" would we tolerate the type of infernal anti-Semitism that led to the Holocaust.
But the Iranian president is a professed anti-Semite dedicated to exterminating Jews, he's a devout enemy of the West and freedom, and is quite unapologetically clear about his sinister aims concerning Israel and America, though he mostly pretends he is pursuing nuclear technology for legitimate reasons.

Syria building 'death trap' villages for Hizballah-inspired conflict with Israel
And when Israel responds to attacks, it will be assailed in the media for attacking "civilian" villages. "Syria building 'death trap' villages," by Yaakov Katz for the Jerusalem Post:
Warning that Israel may face a "Syrian intifada," a high-ranking officer in Northern Command has told The Jerusalem Post that villages recently built by Syria along the border are planned to be used as "death traps" for IDF troops in Hizbullah-inspired attacks.
Since this summer's war in Lebanon, Syria, the officer revealed, has invested large amounts of money in replicating Hizbullah military tactics, particularly in establishing additional commando units and fortifying its short- and long-range missile array.
The idea is to draw Israel into an asymmetric war, the officer said, like the warfare the IDF encounters in combat against the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as well as against Hizbullah in Lebanon.
Over the past two years, Syria has built a number of villages along the border with Israel, some inhabited and some not. At first, the IDF was not sure of their purpose. But now, following the war, the officer said, it was understood.
"Syria drew motivation from Hizbullah's surprise success this summer," the high-ranking officer said. "They now want to copy that type of guerrilla warfare."
While for years it was assumed that Israel had a major edge against Syria's military with regard to a conventional war - tank versus tank, jet versus jet - in an urban setting, the Syrian military would be able, the officer said, to wreak havoc against IDF infantry and armored units like Hizbullah did.
According to the officer, Syria has drawn three major lessons from the war and has begun to implement them. The first is that rockets - 4,000 struck northern Israel during the 33-days of fighting - can paralyze the home front. The second is that antitank missiles can penetrate the Merkava tank and force infantry units to abandon armored personnel carriers and trek into enemy territory by foot. And the third is that in villages and cities the Israeli Air Force's abilities are limited and IDF ground forces can be defeated.
During the war, the IDF fell into several deadly ambushes in southern Lebanese villages; one in Bint Jbail killed eight soldiers from Battalion 51 of the Golani Brigade.
The Syrian military, the officer said, was conducting urban warfare exercises in preparation for the possibility of a war with Israel. The IDF has also dramatically increased its training regiments and has, at all times, between two-to-three brigades training in the Golan Heights.
Lacking clear intelligence regarding Syrian intelligence, the officer said that the Northern Command's "working assumption" was that there was a possibility of war and there was a need to prepare accordingly.
While defense officials have crisscrossed in recent weeks concerning the sincerity of Syrian President Bashar Assad's offer of peace, the top officer said that, according to "all the signs," Syria was preparing for war with Israel. The Syrian military has beefed-up forces along the Golan Heights and Israel has done the same. In the Hermon, for instance, the IDF has doubled the number of troops.
"The feeling is unfortunately that another round is needed before we will be able to engage in a dialogue or peace talks with Syria," the officer said. "It is like with the Egyptians. The war in 1973 was what made it partially possible for [Egyptian president Anwar] Sadat to come to Israel."
Syria, the officer said, has since the war ended, transferred truckloads of weapons and missiles to Hizbullah. Due to the convoys, Hizbullah, he said, was almost back at its full strength where it was before the war with Israel.

Recent visits by Syrian President Bashar Assad to U.S.-allied Yemen and the United Arab Emirates are prompting speculation that Syria is seeking to leave the Iranian orbit and pursue closer ties with the West. Such a move would fulfill a major recommendation of the Iraq Study Group, headed by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III and former Rep. Lee H. Hamilton, which suggested it might be possible through diplomacy to pry Syria away from Iran.

"Rio hit by deadly gang violence"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Gang attacks on buses and police stations in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro have left at least 18 people dead, officials say.
In one incident, seven passengers were burnt to death when gunmen attacked their bus and torched it.
The wave of violence across the city started on Wednesday night and continued into Thursday morning.
Officials said the co-ordinated attacks had probably been planned from jail by imprisoned gang leaders.
I don't know how, but I gathered my strength, got myself into the aisle of the bus and jumped through the window - I felt like I was being toasted
Passenger
The gangs were trying to put pressure on the authorities ahead of the swearing-in of a new state governor on 1 January, Rio state Security Secretary Roberto Precioso told reporters.
"It is very difficult to prevent these types of attacks that were practically kamikaze. Police action prevented the situation from getting much worse," he said.
Favelas occupied
One local media report has spoken of an atmosphere of war in the city, which is preparing for a huge New Year's Eve beach party.
At least 12 police stations and posts in different parts of Rio were attacked with grenades and automatic fire.
Four buses were set on fire, and gunmen are reported to have stopped emergency workers from getting close to the scene."

Forgive Saddam Hussein?
By Ken Joseph Jr.
Special to ASSIST News Service
BAGHDAD, IRAQ (ANS) -- As an Assyrian Christian, the indigenous people of Iraq, with family who were terrorized and imprisoned by Saddam Hussein, hate is a mild word when asked how one feels towards Saddam Hussein.
I cannot erase from my memory the terror in our family. The sheer horror when there was an unexpected knock on the door or an unknown telephone call.
The family members and for that matter nearly one million Iraqis he killed and the countless million lives he destroyed.
My cousin, imprisoned in Abu Ghraib for years simply because she refused to sleep with one of Saddam's cronies knows firsthand.
Another relative with a body scarred from a huge slash across his face to a body covered with cigarette burns and cuts from the same Abu Ghraib knows too.
For our family, Abu Ghraib was a very, very different place beating was every day after lunch and Wednesday and Sunday were days for hanging this was the real Abu Ghraib.
How do you forgive this?
First of all it is important to never forget. One of the true dangers outside of Iraq is that somehow in all that has transpired in Iraq; the sheer evil of Saddam has been forgotten.
I remember! The biggest lesson Saddam taught me concerned the existence of evil. For those who live in democratic and free countries, the concept of evil has gone somewhere.
In a world of political correctness, much of the world is unable to understand because they have never experienced sheer evil.
This was Saddam. His face was everywhere. From the moment you woke up to the time you went to bed he was everywhere. He was on the money, his three pictures one in Arab Headdress, one with his rifle and the other, the old black and white picture in every office was always somewhere.
Driving, his statues were everywhere. He was in your dreams.
The message of Saddam Hussein, is to remind the world that there is evil. It exists and Saddam Hussein and his even more evil sons and all their henchmen embodied it completely.
The fatal flaw following the liberation of Iraq was the clash of cultures one who had lived under evil and knew it firsthand and the other that denied its existence.
This denial of evil brought us to where we today, where the successors to Saddam Hussein in the form of Hakim, Sadr, Sistani and their bosses in Iran are viewed through the prism of situational ethics which see something good in all men, in spite of the simple fact that some men are evil.
Second, though can Saddam be forgiven? The real ones to ask are those whose lives were destroyed by him.
Ask my precious cousin for example. What is she doing today? Is she wallowing in the 15 years taken from him?
No, she forgave him. She was imprisoned because she is a Christian. She forgives, again because, as part of the oldest Church in the world - The Assyrian Church of the East, from the first nation to accept Christianity, she forgave him and a miracle happened.
Not only did she get her previous job back, but honored for the years of suffering she was given the precise job she would have had if she had been working during the time she was in prison!
Better yet, a recent move by the Iraqi Government to accept a request for a province for the Assyrian Christians something our people have dreamed for, for generations!
The lesson as the world prepares for the possible execution of Saddam Hussein? Yes, there is evil in the world. In spite of the advances of technology and the general progress of mankind, there is evil and to deny it is to fall into the trap it sets up.
Also, though is the lesson that no matter how evil falls, in the end it is truth and God that wins.
In the politically correct age in which we live there is no evil and no good, but Saddam Hussein illustrates both.
He was the embodiment of evil. Those that forgave him and moved on, were truly the embodiment of good.
Finally, though, the world must in recognizing that evil does exist, stop coddling the new Saddams Hakim, Sadr, Sistani.
Just as Saddam, they have blood on their hands. I will never forget the evil eyes of Hakim as I looked into them as we spoke.
The core reason for the current difficulties in Iraq has nothing to do with Military Strategy or poor planning. It has to do with a very simple truth the civilized world has forgotten. It is the simple reality of evil.
Denying its existence, those who tried to rebuild Iraq always saw some good. This denial of evil clouded their judgment.
Where they saw cultural diversity and local values, the reality was that it was and still is just plain, old fashioned evil.
Saddam is gone, but the battle with evil is not.
For us, we need to face the uncomfortable fact that evil exists and that we must stand against it, at the same time never forgetting that there is a God and that in the end, it is He that wins.

"Christians flee Iraq, find Syria 'ruthless'
Ministries say believers have no Mideast refuge"
Posted: December 29, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Christians may be fleeing war-torn Iraq and the fighting Islamic factions there to Syria, but that nation also holds "ruthless" positions against Christianity which range from life in prison for talking about your beliefs to death for a Muslim who converts, according to a ministries working there.
"It's better than Iraq, but it's no bed of roses there for sure," Jim Jacobson, president of Christian Freedom International, told WND. "The Christians (there) are stuck between a rock and a hard place."
While Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Iran and other Middle East nations are well-known for persecuting Christians, Syria's actions are of a lower profile. But it is listed among those nations around the world that persecute Christians by everyone from Jacobson's organization to the U.S. government.
In Syria, the constitution requires the president to be a Muslim and specifies that Islamic jurisprudence is a principal source of legislation. And sharing your Christian faith with someone anyone is discouraged as "posing a threat to the relations among religious groups" and carries a penalty of up to life in prison, he said.
"For Christians, one of the core tenets is the ability to share your faith, but in Syria that can lead to arrest (and) persecution," Jacobson said. "We list Syria as one of the top
countries where Christians are facing real persecution.""

"Gov. Should Compensate Crime Victims, Says Gun Rights Group"
By Monisha Bansal
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
December 29, 2006
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - Wisconsin's Democratic governor should reimburse victims of recent armed robberies in the state because its citizens are not permitted to carry concealed weapons and protect themselves when confronted by criminals, a gun rights group said.
It's "time for politicians to pay the price for their decisions," said Joe Waldron, executive director of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), pointing to Gov. Jim Doyle's opposition to concealed carry laws.
Both Doyle and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D), who supports the governor's stance, should "open their wallets," Waldron told Cybercast News Service.
"If they personally feel so strongly that citizens should not be allowed to defend themselves, then they should bear the costs of that disarming of the citizens.""
