Report: NYC Commuter Rail Tunnels Vulnerable to Attack
Friday, December 22, 2006
NEW YORK The explosion from a small bomb could flood commuter train tunnels between New York and New Jersey in a matter of hours, according to a new government analysis that suggests the PATH rail system is more vulnerable than initially thought, a newspaper reported Friday.
The draft analysis, obtained by The New York Times, showed that the PATH system's four tunnels are structurally fragile enough that the damage from a bomb small enough to be carried onto a train could allow 1.2 million gallons of water per minute to gush into a tunnel and flood the system.
About 230,000 people use the PATH system each weekday.
The analysis, characterized as preliminary and continuing, was based on work by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy. The Times obtained it from a government official it did not identify but who it said was troubled by the response from the Port Authority.
A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the PATH system, defended the system's safety......more

Global Terror Concerns Rise For Holidays
(CBS/AP) Australia is warning of possible terrorist attacks in Indonesia around Christmas.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says there has been information about "possible specific terrorist attacks."
Downer did not give details but said churches were among the places targeted in the past. Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation.
Authorities in Indonesia say they have no reason to believe terrorists are plotting attacks during the holiday but thousands of troops will be deployed to guard churches.
There have been terror attacks in Indonesia every year since 2002 but with no attack yet in 2006, some worry that another blast is imminent......

Same to you Vel. Have a wonderful holiday. I'd like to add my thoughts and prayers to those TMers in need as well. Here's hoping for a peaceful and uneventful holiday season.
Records detail missing TSA badges, uniforms
Last Update: 12/22/2006 6:52:13 AM
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - More than 3,700 identification badges and uniform items have been reported lost or stolen from Transportation Security Administration employees since 2003, according to documents obtained by a San Antonio television station.
WOAI-TV received the documents under the Freedom of Information Act.
Los Angeles International Airport reported the most items with 636 missing uniforms. O'Hare International Airport in Chicago reported 189 missing badges.
Bush International Airport in Houston led Texas with 77 missing items. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport had about 40 items gone.
Security experts have said the badges and uniforms could pose a security threat if they end up in the wrong hands.
Earl Morris, field operations general manager for TSA, said the missing items don't mean the system is flawed.
"We have many different security levels in place to thwart any kind of attempt to breech our security," Morris said.
U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, said he will propose legislation to fine TSA employees who lose their badges or uniforms.

Al-Qaeda offers US safe passage from Iraq
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20967589-1702,00.html
THE leader of an al-Qaeda backed group offered US forces safe withdrawal from Iraq within a month if they left their heavy weapons behind, according to an audiotape posted on the internet today.
"We call on (President George W.) Bush not to waste this historic opportunity," said the speaker, identified as Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, head of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq, which was announced in October by al-Qaeda and groups affiliated to it.
The speaker said Washington would have two weeks to accept the offer.
LONDON (AP) Londons police chief said Friday the threat of a terror attack in Britain is growing and warned that the Christmas holidays were an especially dangerous period.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said al-Qaida represented the gravest threat to Britain since World War II and was of an unparalleled nature and growing.
The threat of another terrorist attempt is ever present, he told British Broadcasting Corp. radio. Christmas is a period when that might happen. We have no specific intelligence to do (with) that.
He said al-Qaida posed a greater threat than the Irish Republican Armys 1970-1997 failed campaign to force Northern Ireland out of the United Kingdom and into the Republic of Ireland, which killed 1,775 people.

Ahmadinejad: Britain, Israel, US to 'vanish like the pharaohs'
"Oh, and by the way, we're a nuclear power." From AFP, with thanks to James:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has predicted that Britian, Israel and the United States would eventually disappear from the world like the Egyptian pharaonic kings.
"The oppressive powers will disappear while the Iranian people will stay. Any power that is close to God will survive while the powers who are far from God will disappear like the pharaohs," he said Wednesday, according to Iranian news agencies.
"Today, it is the United States, Britain and the Zionist regime which are doomed to disappear as they have moved far away from the teachings of God," he said in a speech in the western town of Javanroud.
"It is a divine promise."
We'll see.

Ahmadinejad: Iran now nuclear power
He has said this before.
From YnetNews:
Iran is now a "nuclear power," its President, Mahmoud Ahamdinejad, declared Wednesday, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency. During a speech delivered in the Western Iranian province of Javanroud, Ahmadinejad said: " The Islamic Republic of Iran is now a nuclear power, thanks to the hard work of the Iranian people and authorities."
The announcement of Iran as a "nuclear power" is bound to significantly escalate tensions between the West and Iran, and marks a dramatic stage in the Islamic Republic's nuclear campaign.
In recent days, the US military has begun to build up forces around the Gulf, in what is being seen as as a warning to Iran.

Ahmadinejad: Iran has nuclear technology
More threats and bravado from the Thug-In-Chief. "Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: The Iranian People Is the Owner of Nuclear Technology. Talking to Iran in Language of Threats Is a Bitter Mistake," from MEMRITV, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
Following are excerpts from an interview with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad , which aired on the Iranian News Channel (IRINN) on August 1, 2006.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: Look, they are destroying homes with the people inside. They are burning fields. Neither children nor adults are safe from them. With laser-guided bombs, they attack shelters of defenseless women and children leaving them in a pool of their blood.
Crowd: Death to Israel.
Death to Israel.
Death to Israel.
Death to Israel.
Death to Israel.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: They have no boundaries, limits, or taboos when it comes to killing human beings. Who are they? Where did they come from? Are they human beings? "They are like cattle, nay, more misguided." A bunch of bloodthirsty barbarians. Next to them, all the criminals in the world seem righteous.

We ask you: Who lived on the land of America 250 or 300 years ago? Don't the rulers of America today rule because of the massacre of the native Americans? If we accept the principle that anybody whose forefathers ever lived on any land 2,000 or 3,000 years ago should rule today, then America should be ruled by the native Americans who are there today. There is proof that they existed. There are films, photos, documents, maps, and their descendants.
Crowd: Death to America

Today, the Iranian people is the owner of nuclear technology. Those who want to talk with our people should know what people they are talking to. If some believe they can keep talking to the Iranian people in the language of threats and aggressiveness, they should know that they are making a bitter mistake. If they have not realized this by now, they soon will, but then it will be too late. Then they will realize that they are facing a vigilant, proud people.

Disturbing new evidence reveals a threat to our homeland security is worse than originally thought. The News Four WOAI Trouble Shooters first uncovered records last May showing 1400 airport security badges and uniforms are missing from airports here and across the country.
Now, new information obtained by Trouble Shooter Brian Collister shows a dramatic increase in the total number.
But that's not all the Trouble Shooters found.
A WOAI viewer contacted the Trouble Shooters because he found a TSA screener's jacket for sale at a local thrift store. Security experts fear TSA uniforms could help terrorists pull off an attack. Mike Martinez, who found the jacket, said he felt compelled to pull it off the rack. He told News 4 his main concern was for the safety and security of fellow Americans after what happened on 9-11.
The thrift store sale is also a violation of the Transportation Security Administration's policy, which requires "for reasons of security" any discarded uniform must have all distinctive markings removed.

Passenger held in Bulgaria for suspicious luggage
Friday December 22
SOFIA - Bulgarian police arrested a Russian man on Thursday for carrying suspicious objects in his luggage while checking in for a flight from the Black Sea city of Varna to Vienna, it said.
The luggage contained cables, batteries and a solid material which police said resembled components that might be used for a hand-made explosive device. The follow-up check showed the solid material was a substance similar to soap, not explosives. Experts were still working to fully determine its contents.
The Russian man, a member of a ship crew that had docked at Varna port, told investigators he believed he was the victim of "unfortunate joke" by crew members. "The Russian citizen is detained for 24 hours. Members of his crew will be questioned," police said in a statement. Police said the Austrian Airlines flight was delayed for 15 minutes, but took off to Vienna.

French film raises fresh fears over airport safety
Thu Dec 21, 2006
PARIS - A French television reporter managed to smuggle explosive material and knives onto American and French passenger planes apparently revealing serious flaws in security at French airports.
Appearing in a documentary made for state television due to be aired on Friday, the reporter has raised fresh questions about French air safety after accusations last month that it was too easy to gain access to aircraft at Paris' main airport.
