George Will: Webb conveys the message of a boor
Manchester Union Leader ^ | 11/30/06 | George F. Will

THAT WAS certainly swift. Washington has a way of quickly acculturating people, especially those who are most susceptible to derangement by the derivative dignity of office. But Jim Webb, Democratic senator-elect from Virginia, has become a pompous poseur and an abuser of the English language before actually becoming a senator.

Wednesday's Washington Post reported that at a White House reception for newly elected members of Congress, Webb "tried to avoid President Bush," refusing to pass through the reception line or have his picture taken with the President. When Bush asked Webb, whose son is a Marine in Iraq, "How's your boy?" Webb replied, "I'd like to get them (sic) out of Iraq." When the President again asked, "How's your boy?" Webb replied, "That's between me and my boy." Webb told the Post

That's ridiculous.

Asking about someone's BOY would be commonplace here in Texas. It is not derogatory in any way.

Telling only of the fact that you've nothing better to think about.

I referred to my own child, serving Spring 2002 in Afghanistan as a "kid". And others alternatively referred to my "child" as a kid, a young lady, etc. It wasn't offensive whatsoever to me. Folks who knew her from the time she was just out of toddlerhood even referred to my daughter as "our girl". I loved 'em for that reference. She was over there fighting for each of us; and these folks were sharing with me their pride in her.

Sure beats what the local libs in San Francisco were calling my "kid".

The President was doing the same; he was being polite and friendly. At worst, Webb could have said "He's not your "boy". But the response is: I never said he "was" my boy. See how stupid Webb's behavior was, yet?

I didn't get 'the joke' either.

Your humor is apparently as lame as mine is.

Exaaaaaactly.

It's the same here in North Carolina.

But whoa doggies and little fishies, are some folks anal or what?

OMG! The President called... Jim Webb's son.... "your boy"! Run fer the Hills, It's a quagmire in the US!

BUT, OTOH, the President COULD have said: "How's your gender-identity male son doing in Iraq?"

NOW, I would have PAID to have heard Webb answer that one. ;>

I agree, he'd never be impeached...I wonder if Virginia has a process to 'recall' him?

This should surprise no one.

Most if not all of the so called Reagan DemocRats are certifiable insane lunatics. The certifiable ones hate GW more than the real enemies of America. Webb is their Hate GW Poster Boy, and that hatred got him elected.

Webb is proving this reality with his behavior during his campaign and now. His Bush Derangement Syndrome might be worse than Bella Piglosi and Murtha.

>the large (50,000+) Muslim population in northern VA came out in droves to vote against Allen as a proxy for Bush.<

And of course, the fact that the MSM pounded home the message that George Allen was Jewish by blood had nothing to do with Webb's overwhelming Muslim landslide, did it?

What a classless thing to say. Senator Webb ought to be ashamed.

"(50,000+) Muslim population in northern VA "

Are there that many Muslims in Northern Virginia?

I don't think even General Lee had many more than 50,000 soldiers in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Looks like I will be (though reluctantly) crossing Virginia off of my list of States to retire in.

I agree with George Will. The fact is, Webb didn't need to be at the White House at all and could have made his absence a MSM news bite which they would have gobbled up. It is clear that when Webb left the Republican party for the RAT's dung nest, he found his natural home.

In this context "boy" is Texan for "son", as in "How is your son?".It is in no way intented as an insult. Does that explanation help?

"What a classless thing to say. Senator Webb ought to be ashamed"

I agree, but that assumes the guy has a conscience. If he does, his hatred of Bush overwhelms his conscience.

Webb reminds me of Alexandria, Virginia Rep. Moran.

Exactly -same voters elected them both.

Remember, if the RINO John Warner had supported Oliver North this wouldn't have happened.

Which is better/worse, North or Webb?

According to Wa Po, yes. There are several large mosques, I think, and I also think it's the HQ for CAIR (in Alexandria).

These demographics were also mentioned in the recent Wa Po stories about the Muslim who was elected in Maryland.

Congratulations, Virginia. You elected an asshat!

Special congratulations to those who cast protest votes to "punish the Republicans." You are getting the government you deserve.
