America's college campuses, once thought to be bastions of free speech, have become increasingly intolerant toward the practice. Visiting speakers whose views do not conform to the prevailing left-leaning political mind-set on most campuses are at particular risk of having their free speech rights infringed upon.
While academia has its own crimes to atone for, it's the students who have become the bullies as of late. A disturbing number seem to feel that theirs is an inviolate world to which no one of differing opinion need apply. As a result, everything from pie throwing to disrupting speeches to attacks on speakers has become commonplace.
Conservative speakers have long been the targets of such illiberal treatment. The violent reception given to Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, an anti-illegal immigration group, at Columbia University in October is a recent example. Gilchrist had been invited to speak by the Columbia University College Republicans, but was prevented from doing so by an unruly mob of students. What could have been mere heckling descended into yelling, screaming, kicking and punching, culminating in the rushing of the stage and Gilchrist being shuttled off by security.

Cinnamon's an amazing gal - met her at a Freep a few years back, every time I read one of her articles I feel a tiny bit of momentary regret for having moved to New Hampshire.
WTF have they been?
I was routinely shouted down by college sanctioned racist groups when we had "Free Speech Alley" when I went college in the early 90's.
In turn, we paid for visits by Nation of Islam goons via our student fees.
free speech on campus bump
"Cinnamon"? A stripper-turned-columnist? :)
College University intolerance, political correctness, and mob rule are the result if liberals have all their dreams come true. "He has no right to speak," says it all about who they really are.
And let's not forget recent thuggish behavior at Gallaudet University, where the school's Board of Trustees was overruled by old-fashioned mob rule.
Her parents were hippies back in the day. And she's very cute and friendly, so don't be crude.
How do you shout someone down at Gallaudet?

Even the author seems to acknowledge this isn't a new trend.
Political correctness was never about "the ruling administration's political positions". It was always about leftist ideology and indoctrination. There is no dissent from the liberal agenda to be tolerated. To do so is to be "politically incorrect". A criminal guilty of thoughtcrime; a racist, a bigot, a sexist, a homophobe, a puritan, a zealot, a capitalist, a xenophobe, a fascist or in other words "A Republican".
"Diversity training" is nothing other than political re-education. It shows no tolerance or celebration for conservative beliefs, capitalist economics, Christian tradition, or Western heritage.
Totalitarians and despots love it.
