Environment Canada says such low temperatures unusual for this time of year.
The arctic deep freeze trapping Calgary is on track to break a 110-year-old weather record today, but the bitter cold is expected to ease in the coming days.
With a forecast low of -31C today, Calgary could break the -27C record set on this day in 1896.
But factoring in the wind chill, it will feel even colder to people who have to brave the elements, said Environment Canada meteorologist Ross Macdonald.
It's even been too frosty to ski, with Canada Olympic Park shutting the hill yesterday in the name of safety.
Spokesman Chris Dornan said, to his knowledge, it's the first year the weather has forced a November closure.
"It's normally in January or February,"

I don't recall that ever happening in November.
Was Al Gore in Seattle recently? Everywhere he goes, preaching the gospel of global warming, cold weather follows.
I guess Jenny will really be cool today? :o)
meanehile, in East Tennessee it will be a balmy 70 today.
I hope the cold in canada will kill the mosquitos.
Fairly nippy here in N California, not as cold as yesterday and what it may be tonight.
Getting brr reports from friends in Floriduh this past week.
You just don't get it... Global Warming explains *everything* even cooling.</s>
We are having a very unusual cold snap here in Seattle as well, especially for this time of year. We get our snow in January and February.
This one is a little weird - Not just the snow, but the cold that stayed with it.
GLOBAL WARMING CAUSING EXTREME COLD!
I believe that for tonight 90% of California has a freeze warning in effect.
Well, since nearly every potential senerio is predicted by and/or attributed to "global warming", that really means nothing. Using GW kook advocate's reasoning, it is impossible for them to be incorrect, regardless of what happens in the future.
Winter sucks. I live in the desert for a reason.
That's due to the fact that the political left, and envirals in particular, hold to the false premise that since they're yelling the loudest, that must mean they're correct.
My five-year-old daughter possesses more rationale.
"....unexpected, record cold-snaps only makes you look bad. They're predicted to happen by the "Global Warning Model/Theory"."
Haven't seen it lately, so I think that I've put my copy in the file drawer with the Spin Machine and my collection of rubber rulers.
What you apparently don't realize is that the 'theory' has had to be adjusted so much due to the current 36 year long cooling trend that just about everything is 'predicted.'
The idea that these plentiful cold records are unexpected is the real laugh. The number of new low records each year exceeds the new highs by five or six to one. It's particularly exaggerated in the southern hemisphere, where the growth of ice flows in Antarctica has resulted in massive icebergs that are threatening shipping near New Zealand.
Not here in Michigan. When I was a kid, it was wintertime by Thanksgiving. Now, we don't really get snow until after Christmas and the grass is still green at Thanksgiving. Our leaves used to fall in late September - now they fall in late October. I had to mow my lawn last week in Detroit. That was certainly not the case 20 or 30 years ago - I would have been shoveling snow.
There is no question that the climate has gotten warmer over the past 30 years - the debate is to WHY.
I believe (as most rational persons do) that it is merely another warming cycle in the natural order of things. But to say it isn't getting warmer is refusing to see reality. Of course there are always little ups and downs from year to year - but over the past 30 years it has definitely gotten warmer in Michigan.
I have told my wife, who is off work today. This afternoon will not be a Honey Do This session.
The time will be spent in freeze proofing our various and many faucets and yard irrigation stuff above ground or exposed.
In the early 90's or late 80's we had a pipe break in our car port at Christmas-New Year time. That was a lot of fun. Several neighbor's water main valves froze and burst. They were on vacation and I was able to shut down all but 3. It took a call to the mayor to get a water dept guy out to help shut off those 3. He had to heat the valve with a blow torch and it still took both of us to turn the valve with a two man stand up wrench.
It was a return to a cold and frozen hell for the neighbors. They had no water, and we had a power outage with no heat except stoves. Most were very grateful with what I did.
A vile liberal neighbor tried to turn me into the water dept for shutting off his water. He was told by the dept and Mayor that I saved his house and thousands of $'s on his water bill. He never said thank you. His wife apologized for his behavior for years, even after he went to liberal hell.
LOL! I started out yesterday in shorts, figuring that it would warm up as the sun rose. In the few minutes that it took to drive to the county offices in Martinez, my windshield started to collect ice as I drove, with a clear sky! - That's what I call Global Warming.
It may be getting warmer for your area, but mostly it is markedly cooler across the country.
You're arguing a straw man off of the reports from news articles where the people writing the news are moronic alarmists who really don't understand what they're saying.
The idea of extreme weather patterns, including extreme and unseasonable cold, has been a part of the theory of global warming since day 1. The fluidic nature of the atmosphere dictates it.
