Video: Rangel says men join the army only if they can't have "a decent career"

Hence hgis support for the draft. If even our volunteers are there voluntary, why shouldn't everyone be?

I want to make it abundantly clear: if there's anyone who believes that these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits. And most all of them come from communitiies of very, very high unemployment. If a young fella has an option of having a decent career or joining the army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq.

Why should we care what this over-blown windbag says about anything? It takes up our valuable print space.

That's what I figured. Was he drafted, too? Anyway, military service hasn't seemed to hurt his career.

Most everyone was drafted until Nixon ended the draft in the early 70s.

What ticked me off is the son of Mike Wallace didn't call him on his statements about our volunteer warriors.

No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits.

You've got it, jan. Rangel's right, alright.

He's kinda got this one right, too:

If a young fella has an option of having a decent career or joining the army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq.

I just must assume he left out one word...

If a young fella has an option of having a decent career or joining the army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would rather not be in Iraq.

Rangel simply neglected to mention the young fella bet his life for the option of having a decent career and a decent country in which to have said career. That part probably lays on the cutting room floor.

IIRC, he said he enlisted. He was a drop out that came back from Korea and went to law school. Prolly on the GI Bill.

"a high school drop-out."
Not defending him, but just for the sake of the record....

He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City. He received a BS from the New York University School of Commerce and obtained a degree in Law from St. John's University in 1960.

Rangel is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans.
.......

served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1952, earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service in the Korean War.

.

No Joke.

JOHN KERRY's most recent cut at the U.S. Military was purposely aimed at the very Heroes who have always brought the Joy of Freedom to others 'round the world.

JOHN KERRY's 1st cut at the same Freedom-fighting U.S. Military during the Vietnam War brought:

Actually SHARPTON was quite lucid when he called for a Draft resumption in a new time of war right after 9/11, that would again see Americans on TV burning down their own cities as in the 1960's.

Same-Same right now.

Maybe it's true - look at Colin Powell, Wesley Clark, and Janis Karpinski. ;)

I can't put my finger on the 3 articles I found last night but have found this one.

Rangel resides in Harlem with his wife, Alma, a former social worker, whom he met at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom.

They have two children, Alicia and Steven.

He is a Roman Catholic.

His father physically abused his mother and left the family when Rangel was 6 years old.

His mother cleaned houses and worked in a factory.

He quit school at 16 and drifted from job to job before joining the Army.

Rangel served in the Army from 1948 to 1952 and was in an all-black artillery battalion during the Korean War.

He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for heroic action, including the rescue of 40 men from behind enemy lines.
