Calls for calm as crowd stones Iraqi PM
Reuters ^

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Angry fellow Shi'ites stoned Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's motorcade in a Shi'ite stronghold of Baghdad on Sunday in a display of fury over a devastating car bomb that tore through their area.

Maliki was visiting the Sadr City slum to pay respects to some of the 202 victims of last week's devastating bombing.

"It's all your fault!" one man shouted as, in unprecedented scenes, a hostile crowd began to surge around the premier and then jeered as his armored convoy edged through the throng away from a mourning ceremony.

The area is a base for the Mehdi Army militia led by Maliki's fellow Shi'ite leader Moqtada al-Sadr.

Though the violence was limited, it was a dramatic demonstration of the popular passions Maliki and his national unity government are trying to calm following Thursday's multiple car bombs in Sadr City -- the worst since the U.S. invasion -- and later revenge attacks.

On Sunday, a car bomb killed at least 6 people and wounded more than 20 in a market just south of Baghdad, police said.

On the third full day of a curfew on the capital, mortar bombs crashed down in various parts of Baghdad and residents reported isolated and mostly unexplained clashes.

The government has said traffic can circulate again from Monday morning but, after a series of high-level meetings, it again appealed for calm.

Kill Sadr NOW!!!

Then it will be a full-blown civil war. These people cannot live together. We are trying to force this unified government that is doomed to fail.

Why do we care if Muzzies slaughter each other? The more of them that die is better for the world.

There may not be a good argument to that.

But remember that there is a larger argument: If we cut and run and leave everyone who worked with us to be murdered, it will be the end of the US as a world power.

No nation will align with us in the future because we run and leave our allies to die.

As this war against Islam's attempt to take over the world progresses, many nations and millions of people are going to be forced to choose up sides. Whether the greedy "girlie" French, the reluctant Germans or whomever, they will be forced to take sides.

They are not going to side with a country that runs and leaves them to die.

If we could not win, it is smart to run. But it is a unforgivable sin to have the ability to win and run anyway.

*** The fact that Sadr and his minions are still alive proves we are not serious in this "war". We cannot win without killing the enemy. It's time to leave Iraq. ****

I'm afraid you're right.

Two years ago (IIRC) there was a 'warrant' for his arrest and we could have capped his ass and destroyed his whole 'army' - but we didn't.

Then when our two GIs (or was it 3?) got publicly BUTCHERED about 18 months ago we should have taken the gloves off and unleashed the Dogs of War, again 'we' didn't.

I know Dubya keeps saying that the "generals" are running the war, but now I think he's lying. The Rules of Engagement SUCK, it's a p.c. war. This nonsense can only come from the top (Him or Condi). Just like LBJ played general, Dubya is now. Not to the same extent, but in effect it's the same.

He's tying the hands of the military and our guys are playing Moving Target for the terrorists. It's like Whack A Mole or Russian Roulette in a Hummer. Every time I hear "X number Killed By IED" I want to f**kin scream.

Iraq's FUBAR, it's time to go. Our guys are dying for nothing now - except political correctness. And that's bullshit.

Maliki is reaping what he's sowed, calls for calm as crowds stone Iraqi PM. What is interesting is that as PM he should have applied an even hand to militias throughout the country. And shut them all down. Instead where he appeared and was confronted by, was by members of his political and religious group led by a cleric turned politician with his (Sadr) own militia. Its clear what must be done. What must be done and the background to this mess is in my website http://www.theusmat.com/

Could this be what you're seeing?

Yes, that was definitely it - that's the direction the smoke was coming from.

Also, the distant noises we heard in the late aftenoon and early evening have stopped now. Don't know what all that was yet.

"Why do we care if Muzzies slaughter each other? The more of them that die is better for the world."

Well, I think it is horribly sad that so many innocent people are dying there. If not but for the grace of God, I could be trying to raise my family in a place like that. They are good people caught in a war that is tearing their country apart, and that threatens their life and security every day.

But even if I didn't feel that way, I happen to believe that our soldiers are more valuable than that. They have sacrificed their lives, some 2800+. Over 10,000 have been injured. They are there because they believe that the lives of the Iraqi people have value and are worth fighting for. Otherwise, we would have just bombed the entire country. Our soldiers deserve our respect. We respect them by recognizing that their cause is worth fighting for.

John Kerry is that you? Allegra's tagline calls YOU a cut and run surrender monkey, and she is there with the troops. You know, the troops who are too stupid to do anything other than "get stuck in Iraq". Dying for nothing, of course. Who need YOU to tell them their President is a liar, the war is ruined, worthless, etc. when THEY don't seem to think so. That's what you're screaming about...they're stuck in this quagmire that's all Bush's fault and Bush is lying. Again I say, John Kerry is that you?? You can pound sand.

Yes, I know. I've been in this war zone for nearly three years. ;-)

In my early days here before the airport was really operational, we used to catch C-130s back and forth from Kuwait when we went on leave...and often at night. The combat landings in the C-130s are WAY more fun than the ones the commercial jets do when landing at Baghdad Airport.

I haven't found out yet what the noises were. There were several. And they were far off.

"But the PM needs to get off his duff and start chopping heads."

It seems his policy is 'let the chips fall where they may'.

Has anyone every seen what a liberal thinking ME leader looks like? I think me may be getting a glimpse of one.

Oh, and while you're pounding sand, pause long enough to learn what "Counterinsurgency Warfare" is. Like it or not, that's what we're fighting. And here's a hint: it is military doctrine. MILITARY. Not civilian. Not Bush's. Not Rummy's.

I will say this again:

Is it not interesting that the troops are anxious to do their part in Iraq.
The reenlistment rate is at an all time high. Soldiers who would have served their enlistment time and could quit, re-up and can't wait to go back.

The people that cry and wail about how our troops are being mistreated, abused, etc., are the Schumers, Rangles, Kerrys, etc.

Wonder why that is? The people whose skin is in the war think it is right. Those with no skin shout to the top of their lungs that it is wrong.

Could it be that the real reason is that hating Bush is more important that anything, including total failure in Iraq?

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your very reasonable post.

I am so tired of these "the going has gotten tough; it's time for us to surrender" people on here.

Those people belong on DU as far as I'm concerned.

I wish someone would tell me, if this war is SO important, and I believe it is, why the constant pussy-footing around?

My answer's just a tad different than yours: It's because America fights conflicts since WWII in a way that will not disrupt our citizens...and particularly not disrupt our economy. The calculation, particularly in regards to the middle east since the 70's when that region held the key to the survival of Europe's and America's economies, has consistently been that America has much more to lose from a general war in the middle east than anyone else has...that's more true than ever with our enemy being the rabid islamofascists that live in squalor and deprivation and consider a badge of honor to do so.

So we fight our wars at low simmer, because we don't want the logical results of a big messy general war where all hell breaks loose...because our own people will not tolerate the sacrifices that will come from that. So we fight in a way to control the damage to our economic way of life...because in a democracy the people will get what they want the most. So to me, that's why we fight like we don't really mean it. Our people will tolerate many things, but a depressed economy is not one of those things.
