An English school caretaker nearly drowned as he set a record for hooking the largest catfish in Europe, a 226 pound monster christened "Jaws" in Spain.
It took two friends to keep Carl Smith of Owestry from being dragged into the River Ebro in Spain after fighting the giant fish for 35 minutes, The Times of London reports.
"The force of the tug practically sent me crashing to the ground," Smith said. "It's mouth, with rows of sharp teeth, made it look like a man-eating shark."
European wels catfish are reputed to eat anything that can fit into their huge mouths.
The catfish was released after being weighed, measured and photographed with Smith holding his tail.
Common in Spain, Italy and Greece, the catfish generally weigh between 80 and 100 pounds.
The previous European record was 224 lbs.
And I thought skinning a two pounder was a big job.
Biggest fish I ever caught was a 75 lb halibut in Alaska.
They aren't related the one is a slimy bottom dwelling lowlife the other one is a fish.
That was so funny, I forgot to laugh. :)
my middle name aint 'lame' for nuttin lol
What does Hillary have to do with a catfish thread?
the barbs....she'll stick ya man, she'll stick ya
Dang! That one would feed a whole village!
I add a good bit of it to my Caesar dressing, or any other flavored mayo that I make. And it's an absolute must for chicken and pork. I like to add it to the blackening seasoning we use.
I used to go to Baltimore when the McCormick spice factory was there and you could tell what they were processing that day by the smell in the air.
That's no catfish....it's the LOCH NESS MONSTER for goodness sake! Wow!
Darn, you've spilled the secret.
Old Bay's the stuff I use when I make my "special" blackened anything.
Nice blend of spices and not too much pepper nor salt.
I was pan fishing on Seneca Lake in New York State years ago when I hit a school of very hungry perch. They grabbed the night walkers as soon as they hit the water. I caught enough for two good fish fries in about an hour.
What is it with Spain? First millions of anchovies wash up on the beach, now some guy catches a catfish the size of a pick-up truck.
I like pearch too.
'Old Bay' even has it's own page on Wikipedia.
File under.....
More than I need to know.
;->
I dunno anything about that...
But chicks dig the coat big time!
...if you know what I mean.
I heard that in Tennessee around one of the big TVA dams.
