A RASH of pop prophets tell us that Muslims in Europe are reproducing so fast and European societies are so weak and listless that, before you know it, the continent will become "Eurabia," with all those topless gals on the Riviera wearing veils.

The notion that continental Europeans, who are world-champion haters, will let the impoverished Muslim immigrants they confine to ghettos take over their societies and extend the caliphate from the Amalfi Coast to Amsterdam has it exactly wrong...

If you knew Areab history, you would know that most of these conquests were done by slave armies... Arabs themselves didn't fight except at the very beginning (see for instance Patricia Crone's book, Slaves on Horses)
Moreover the East was not Melkite, so they didn't fight too hard against the Muslims...

Then you will know that in the past twenty years football hooligans have killed less people than LA gangs kill in a month. The United States attracts the quality. American Muslims have a higher income level than our national average. We hear about the handful of rabble-rousers, but more of our fellow Americans who happen to be Muslims are doctors, professors and entrepreneurs.

Exactly. Europeans never deal with the problems in manageable bites. They let things go to the extent that force is the answer, and then, they go way too far.
You're assuming that things (attidudes) don't change. They change all the time.
Steyn correctly notes that young Muslim European men will soon (have already?) outnumber young non-Muslim European men in many countries. The genocides Peters refers to were not carried out by women or by senior citizens.
To pick just one example, half of all births in France are already to Muslim parents. The demographic bomb is VERY real, not concocted nonsense.
Furthermore, there is no way the Muslims in Europe today will assimilate, gradually adopting the ways of their host nations.
In other words, the threat is REAL, not concocted nonsense.
The author brings the usual dump truck load of liberal angst and self hate as well. Hence the focus on the past sins of Europe, and barely a mention of Islam's bloody history.
Nor does the author have a sense of historical perspective, and hence he has no context in which to place past events. The author fails utterly to recognize that the primary method Islam has always spread is by the sword, and that the Islam of today is still bent on bloody conquest.
This article is off base in almost every particular, but nevertheless serves as a good example of the slumbering delusions of the left.
The author lives in a dream world. His entire premise is dead-wrong. The Muslims are not todays Jews, but todays Nazis.
And just as the majority of Europe turned a blind eye to Nazism they do it today to Islam.
Fact is that Europeans ARE living in their feel-well Socialist wellfare-state, even as it is crumbling. Political correctness, which controls the media, the "elite" and politcal establishment, and (nearly) TOTAL moral degeneration (Abortion, Euthanasia, Gay marriage etc.) have left Europeans (keep in mind that I'm talking about West and Central Europeans, not Eastern Europeans) as a bunch of apathic weaklings. Muslims ARE overbreeding them in a nauseating speed, while Europeans ARE aging and succumbing childless. That's happening right now.
There is no way todays Europeans will get tough on Islam. There may be half-hearted pleas to integrate and actionistic attempts to ban veils etc. but at the same time thousands of new and bigger mosques are being built. I don't know what secret fascination the author seems to have with European Nazism as his imaginary saviour from Islamism... In reality Muslims are replacing the (in near future non-existant) Germans as Nazi hordes.
I see too much wishful thinking here on this thread. Let's get real.
