Media Says Withdrawing Troops Would Be a Disaster, Belatedly Endorses Bush -
NEW YORK The news media has changed its tune since the election and now agrees that withdrawing U.S. troops before the Iraq is stabilized would be a disaster. As a result, the media has belatedly endorsed George Bush and called for a new vote for the House and Congress.
How can you run an effective strategy for the war with a divided government? asked Seymour Hersh, a previous critic of the Bush Administration and the Iraq war in a series of articles published in the New Yorker. What we need now is unity. And withdrawing troops would be a disaster. The Democrats were flat out wrong.
Before the election, Congressman John Murtha was lionized by the media as a decorated Marine Corps veteran who transformed the political debate over Iraq when he called for a speedy withdrawal of U.S. troops. Now the media sees him as an old fogey whom they have discovered was questioned during the Abcsam corruption investigation 25 years ago.
We missed that, said Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr. of The New York Times. Our fact checking has been computerized, and the records dont go back 25 years. Were investigating that, and we will announce a new policy on fact checking soon.
When asked by a reporter what kind of stability she saw in Iraq if the U.S. does withdraw its troops, soon-to-be Speaker Nancy Pelosi replied:
Im not here to talk about any one proposal because every one of the proposals from right to left in our caucus was about a formula for bringing the troops home. So, were just taking about timing, the fact is that bringing the troops is what is going to happen.
So what happens in Iraq when the troops are withdrawn?
Im not here to talk about what the press recorded [about Hoyers statement that withdrawal would lead to a civil war]. What Im here to say is what Mr. Murthas resolution does, and that resolution is to say that strategic redeployment in the region over the horizon with a force to go in as necessary to protect us, us the American people in case of acts of terrorism that could be a threat to our neighbors in the region is a better way, is a better way to proceed. Yes, there were other proposals that had a similar approach but a longer timetable on it and again, again this is not about politics, its about the unity in our party This has a direct impact on the strength of our military to protect us wherever a threat to our security may be in the world. It has a direct impact on the safety of American people and yes, it has an impact on the stability in the region.
