MADRID (Reuters) - Outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, the prison's former U.S. Commander said in an interview on Saturday.
Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski told Spain's El Pais newspaper she had seen a letter apparently signed by Rumsfeld which allowed civilian contractors to use techniques such as sleep deprivation during interrogation.
Karpinski, who ran the prison until early 2004, said she saw a memorandum signed by Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods.
"The handwritten signature was above his printed name and in the same handwriting in the margin was written: "Make sure this is accomplished,"" she told Saturday's El Pais.
"The methods consisted of making prisoners stand for long periods, sleep deprivation ... playing music at full volume, having to sit in uncomfortably ... Rumsfeld authorized these specific techniques."
The Geneva Convention says prisoners of war should suffer "no physical or mental torture, nor any other form of coercion" to secure information.
SOunds like a week I spent watching my grandtriplets.
And it certainly doesn't sound as abusive as basic training was 31 years ago.
That should explain everything.
Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
She is a product of the "Diversity Program" in the government and military -- fill a post with a minority, bedamned the consequences....
Short response:
She committed Treason, lock her up and shoot her.
Reuters is an enemy and can NEVER be trusted.
Rummy did nothing wrong and he served with honor.
I would authorize abuse beyond your wildest imagination and your most frightening of nightmares .....get the info and kill them in the process. I would call my interrogators "Soul Eaters" and they would leave the room well fed. But that's just me showing off my good, warm and fuzzy side.
She retired a Colonel. Wearing the Rank of a BGen in this photo on her book is against the UCMJ. Which I belive as an retired officer she still is accountable to.
Sleep deprivation is a form of torture.
I would not consider sleep deprivation an "abuse." And apparently that is the worst of it, or she'd have mentioned it.
People who cannot put thing in perceptive are stupid and doom to fail in everything in their miserable life.
It's torture. You want to unhinge someone mentally, keeping 'em awake is a really good way to do it. You can make it worse by putting them in a room with no windows and keeping the lights on all the time. A person just loses their mental reference points with reality after a while.
Putting people in shredders is not torture. That's just plain killing. Some people can take a lot of physical abuse. For those you have to have alternative methods.
Thanx for the feedback. It's the authors responsibility to write in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.I simply made a statement based upon my interpetation of the article. If a "morphing" is taking place perhaps it's due to a lack of clarity on the part of the author.I stand by my statement.I believe Karpinski is making statements that are incongruous:)
Didn't Bill Clinton get caught having a sexual encounter with her once?
I can top that. Karl Rove gave me my own set of keys to the weather and earthquake machines.
"If your gonna lie you better be really good at it."LOL-i agree.BC is one of the best.In another era he would have been selling snake oil. When this initially became an issue,it sounded as though she(K)was a victim of msm anti-war agit/prop.Now she's implicating Rumsfeld-claiming first hand evidence that R formally authorized abuses?Does her demotion from Gen Officer to Col have any bearing on her claims? Is she trying to divert attention from herself to Rumsfeld?Unfortunately we aren't privy to all the dynamics at play here.
I know I hated to work for these types. They never worried how much *you* had to do (late nights, lost weekends, missed family holidays) to make *them* look good.
Blech.
May be you can enlighten us and tell us how can we interrogate terrorists.
This stupid ass was the "officer" in charge of Abu Ghraib at the time of the nonsense.
She should be court Martialed and give up her pension.
I'd torture them. What's the problem?
Don't try to read too much into people's posts.
Have a nice day.
I saw the headline, thought to self, hmm.. maybe someone else will get a clue as to what is going on. I think you do. I dare not read the rest of the thread, I've got this giggle struggling to break free.
So she justifies her incompetance on the job by blaming the boss? Slick. /sarc
