MADRID (Reuters) - Outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, the prison's former U.S. Commander said in an interview on Saturday.

Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski told Spain's El Pais newspaper she had seen a letter apparently signed by Rumsfeld which allowed civilian contractors to use techniques such as sleep deprivation during interrogation.

Karpinski, who ran the prison until early 2004, said she saw a memorandum signed by Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods.

"The handwritten signature was above his printed name and in the same handwriting in the margin was written: "Make sure this is accomplished,"" she told Saturday's El Pais.

"The methods consisted of making prisoners stand for long periods, sleep deprivation ... playing music at full volume, having to sit in uncomfortably ... Rumsfeld authorized these specific techniques."

The Geneva Convention says prisoners of war should suffer "no physical or mental torture, nor any other form of coercion" to secure information.

This former General needs to be brought up on charges.

The Genevea Convention does not apply to terrorists. She is aiding and abeting the enemy and she knows it. She may also be disclosing classified Military orders.

She's in a snit because she got in trouble for Abu Grahib. The Army is much better off without her.

Re-call her to active duty and demote her for conduct unbecoming to a second lieutenant - dismiss her with no pension.

The horror... I cannot believe that we have reached this level of incredible stupidity that we consider this "torture".

My (career Army) brother has direct knowledge / experience with this bitch. What she is up to right now is totally in line with her character.

Does this fat dyke actually have the letter from Rumsfeld? No, of course not.

Karpinski and Karpinski ALONE is responsible for the frathouse unprofessionalism at Abu Ghraib. The Pentagon rightly removed her from service as result. But because she is a woman, the media is giving her a total pass.

..which allowed civilian contractors to use techniques such as sleep deprivation during interrogation

How in the world can anyone, even someone as stupid as Al Reuters, construe the above statement as authorizing what Karpinski's soldiers did? This in no way excuses her lack of supervision. She can obfuscate all she wants but it was a few of her troops that abused people at Abu Grahib (for one night).

Al Reuters is so predictable. Karpinski has definitely joined the other side talking to them.

She was busted to Colonel before she was forced to retire.

How did she ever manage to be promoted to full Colonel, never mind General? Obviously, it wasn't for her management skills.

Show me the letter. I have seen lots of letters. It's easy to say, "I saw a letter." B.S.
