I did a whole lot of growing up in downtown Detroit. I once had a hooker pull a gun on me at the corner of Cass and Bagley (nice part of town)--she and I got to talking (once she tucked said gun back into her waistband) and it turned out she was actually quite friendly. Not that kind of friendly. I'm a girl. The thing is, I bet I could have dropped the N word any number of times, once Miss H and I got over our awkward greeting and got into real conversation. I bet she wouldn't have noticed at all. Would I drop the word on a bunch of strangers? No. It's not a word I use, period. I wager, however, that I would be equally jeopardized using the word surrounded by a gaggle of uberlibs as I would be in the middle of a group of brothers.

Like I said, I don't use the word. I just don't. I never use any of the words, other than scientific, which refer to female genitalia, either...but not because you or anyone else tells me not to.
