Teacher Bill Morgan walks into his third-grade class wearing a black Pilgrim hat made of construction paper and begins snatching up pencils, backpacks and glue sticks from his pupils. He tells them the items now belong to him because he "discovered" them. The reaction is exactly what Morgan expects: The kids get angry and want their things back. Morgan is among elementary school teachers who have ditched the traditional Thanksgiving lesson, in which children dress up like Indians and Pilgrims and act out a romanticized version of their first meetings. So begins an Associated Press story focusing on how teachers like Morgan (who teaches at Cleveland Elementary School in San Francisco) are "trying to portray is a different point of view" about Thanksgiving -- i.e., a far less fun one. Some think that's akin to being the grinch who stole Christmas, or a rehash of Indigenous Peoples Day. "He is teaching his students to hate their country," said Janice Shaw Crouse, a former college dean and high school teacher who is now a spokeswoman for Concerned Women for America. "That is a very distorted view of history, a distorted view of Thanksgiving." Even if it's not entirely distorted, is it a good idea?

Caring, sharing and giving -- that is what was originally intended." Adam McMullin, a member of the Seminole tribe of Oklahoma and a spokesman for the National Congress of American Indians, favors providing a more factual account. "You can't just throw an Indian costume on a child," he said. AP Laverne Villalobos outside Ortega School in Pacifica Which, according to the AP story, a number of schools have stopped doing. Laverne Villalobos, a member of the Omaha tribe of Nebraska who now lives in Pacifica and considers Thanksgiving "a day of mourning," ....

With all of these children involved in Islamic studies when do they have time for this nonsense?
Wow. It just gets crazier and crazier. This isn't teaching, it's indoctrination.
I guess common sense and maturity are not requirements to be a teacher. Too bad.
Tell the "teacher" to then just leave and give back his share to those Indians.
The sad part is reading the comments from "grown ups" following the SFgate article. So many are still following that comic book level of liberalism where Columbus and the Pilgrims are guilty of so many "atrocities" and we must expose our children to the "truth".
"Teacher Bill Morgan walks into his third-grade class wearing a black Pilgrim hat made of construction paper and begins snatching up pencils, backpacks and glue sticks from his pupils. He tells them the items now belong to him because he "discovered" them."
Correction: aspiring re-education camp leader Bill Morgan walks into his third-grade class wearing a black beret made of hemp and begins snatching up pencils, backpacks and glue sticks from these spawn of the bourgoisie. He tells them the items now belong to the state because the state has expropriated them.
I guess if the Pilgrims had not emigrated to American, the country would NEVER had been populated and the "Natives" would have lived in peace and harmony to this day.
As a 1/3 (Canadian) Mohawk descendant, I suggest one and all should study history as to just how the "peaceful" Natives lived BD (Before Discovery). It might be enlightening for some.
As an aside, being French Canadian and Part Indian, I wonder if I began referring to myself as a French-Canadian-Indian-American,if I could qualify for any preferred treatment and benefits, I don't now enjoy as a simple (but PROUD) American???
Since Antarctica is the only land on the planet that wasn't "stolen" from indigenous peoples then we ought to establish a socialist colony there for his ilk of lefty.
That teacher sounds like he's a real jerk.Of course he probably feels he's enlightening the children.I(for the life of me)cannot understand what makes people like him tick.I guess we should all appologize for being Americans?Isn't that the lesson?
Any more, all I can say he is just a big creep and needs to be fired. Funny why we can't rise up and get that done!
These people are ruining the minds of the kids.
This "teacher" should have been given a referral for mental health counseling. What a twit.
Parents don't know.
You nailed it.
I want the Fed Gov. to just keep pi**ing billions of dollars down the endless drain on education.
Seventy cents out of ever dollar I pay in property taxes goes for schooling in my county, and they are turning out children dumber than myself when I was in school fifty five yrs. ago.
My daughter had my grandson prepared for school upon his interring. He could complete a sentence and new all of his numbers before kindergarten. Today he is fourteen and an A student. Because he had a mother and, father who cared for their child and, wanted him to progress as he grew into life.
Someone had posted yesterday that 35 or 40% of children born in America today are born out of wedlock. This is frightening, these will be the people running this country in the future.
Yes the true meaning of Thanksgiving is to hate America and reinforce WHITE LIBERAL GUILT.
Let's not teach kids to be thankful - but hey, as I look around at kids today the educational establishment has been very successful in filling their heads with mush.
I saw that too. That is really scary.
There should be a growing cottage industry for millstones to hang around the necks of these poisonous "educators".
