Vanity: THE GOP nominee for '08; His name is Duncan Hunter
bushfamfan | 11/24/06 | bushfamfan

I just want to have a thread to discuss House Rep. Duncan Hunter who is going to be one of our GOP nominees. Seems as if a lot of people on FR are complaining about our choices for 2008 when this great man is going to be in the race as well. I just think he needs to get some coverage and wanted to start this thread.

He is the man conservatives should get behind and I think he deserves his own thread to remind us that we do have a great candidate this time if we'd only realize it.

I want to encourage as many conservative Republicans as possible to enter the race. We need lots of solid candidates, and I intend to keep my eye on Duncan Hunter. Thanks for bringing him to my attention.

However, the first thing I thought when I saw his picture was, "untelegenic". I'm sorry, but the reality today is that a person needs to really shine on the TV in order to have a chance. Next to Hillary, Hunter will look like lint unless he gets an image consultant. He's got boring white male written all over him, and no amount of earth tones will be able to change that. He makes Al Gore look like Prince Charming.

Not that it's right, mind you. What a sorry state when image outranks substance. But it's the world we live in, and we need to face this.

What is his stance on my tagline and the proper role of government in our lives??? I'll seriously consider him if someone knowledgeable about his stances will answer that for me... I don't know the man at all, really!!!

I do believe in "guilt by association" and I'd also like to know who he likes and dislikes in order to size him up for support, or non-support. Someone please help out here with true observations if you will. Sincerly!!!

I was listening to Neal Boortz for a while this afternoon, he read a survery result that indicates onlu 8.8% of the population is conservative, 14% is liberal and 32% consider themselves libertarians.

I heard that too. He also said something like 30% conisder themselves "centrists" and 7% or something like that are authoritarians/socialists. I think you can lump the socialists, liberals and moderates together. The moderates want a mild version of what the liberals want and the liberals want a mild version of what the communists want, so they are all going in the same direction. I don't know if there can be a fusion of social conservatives and libertarians. Some libertarians have an unrealistic view of foreign policy -- isolationism that is probably as unrealistic as the neocons' "nation building." Some social conservatives cannot accept that the war on drugs has been as big a disaster as the drug culture itself. Both liberals and many conservatives are behind the war on drugs because they find it useful to militarize the police. Some libertarians will not compromise if the war on drugs is moderated and some things are legalized and some things remain illegal.

Conservatives and libertarians had better learn to cooperate or they might as well accept that Marxists will be running the country in a few years. A lot of leftists will reluctantly vote for President Hillary even though she is not socialist enough for them. That should give one pause.

I get the same impression, without the libertarians conservatives are so outnumbered it's not even a contest. I'll admit it gives me more than a little pause...

we all need to remember one thing: A bird can't fly with just one wing, needs two wings.... we should all take that into mind and learn to get along so we don't end up with Marxists running things.

PS to the border watchers. I admire Tancredo for what he has done on the border issue, but I do not think he can be Commander in Chief because of his military deferment for mental health issues.

How does anyone have knowledge of current politics, goverment and NOT know the name Duncan Hunter. He's on the TV all the time!

Since there seems to be other Freepers that haven't heard of Duncan Hunter either, I don't think I'm that stupid & I know I'm not lying. Maybe if I could see a picture of the man, I might recognize him - but I gotta say that I have no name recognition of him. Maybe it's because I live in the East. I'm not against the guy - like I said - I'm open minded to any good conservative candidate & will certainly read the links you gave to find out more about him.

The little that I've picked up about him on this thread sounds really good - but if he is on TV all the time - it doesn't seem like he's got a lot going in the charisma department - not cutting the guy down or anything - I just haven't noticed him.

I'll check him out.

One reason I believe he is not known, is that this guy is solid, sort of quiet for a politician; He does not come across as a media-hoar, unlike MacaCain, Graham or chuck Hegel... all certified "useful Idiots." of the MSM.

I'm sorry about your comment about being 'telegenic'. If you ever see him he looks like the Army Ranger he was, the armed services chairman he was, the man you could look to to keep America safe. And do we really care about lipstick on a pig Hillary in these times of war? Hunter is extremely impressive if you watch him and maybe not in the Brad Pitt way you seem to think, maybe we need a pretty boy?! But in the keep you safe, impressive, Presidential way.

so if he waited, are you saying, his ex wife would have died?

I think we need to be a tad more sophisticated and realize that speculation equals fund raising.

In the end he may not run however, the fact he can use speculation to raise money is politically asstute and useful for us in 2008.

(it is far more valuble than the suckers and useful idiots of the 2006 third party votes)

Thanks for the ping, Lady.

Duncan Hunter is a man I would support for President. He's miles ahead of anyone else mentioned, and he has no dirty laundry behind him. He has represented California in a way few others have.

Americans are begging for strong immigration law enforcement, and the other GOP candidates offer nothing on that disastrous issue.

For those who aren't familiar with him: http://www.house.gov/hunter/

Successful candidates of either party are actually governors, NOT SENATORS, or House of REPS. Candidates who actually get elected that are NOT governors, usually are not successful and do NOT finish their term. (either die or are assasinated. check it out.
