What are Russia's four main contributions to Iran's nuclear program?

What are Russia's four main contributions to Iran's nuclear program?

Russia, as the prime subcontractor for Iran's nuclear program, is providing:

1) Six nuclear reactors for Iran. Four are at Bushehr and two are at Akhvaz.

2) A uranium-conversion plant at Bushehr that can be used for uranium enrichment.

3) An exemption in the UN resolution on Iran. In its draft resosultion the Russians have exempted “materials, equipment, technology" used at Bushehr 1. This exemption will allow Iran to convert the lightly-enriched fuel in the light-water nuclear reactor into weapon-grade 235. It need only remove fuel rods from Bushehr, then extracting their pellets, and feed this enriched uranium into its centrifuges. The centrifuges could then produce weapon-grade U-235 in less than 2 month. (Iran could keep the operation secret by substituting dummy rods for those it removed from the Bushehr reactor.)

4) The reactor-grade uranium for Bushehr 1 (which goes into operation in October 2007.)

Russia may be also making unofficial contributions. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) laboratory at Seibersdorf, Austria, ascertained that Iranian centrifuges made indigenously in Iran — not imported gear — showed traces of on enriched uranium with a purity level of 36 percent U-235. Russia appears to have been the source of this enriched uranium, since the IAEA lab also found a "likely match" between the atomic signatures of the 36% uranium used in Russian submarines and the traces gathered from Iranian centrifuges. Then there is the polonium 210 used to explode the bomb. The AIEA determined that Iran has obtained polonium 210, an isotope. And the likely source is Russia, which uses it (in combination with beryllium) to ensure the chain reaction leading to a nuclear explosion begins at the right time.

A Persian-Russian alliance is something that could turn into a formidable pressence.

The combination of oil and nukes could be interesting.

A uranium-conversion plant at Bushehr that can be used for uranium enrichment.

The plant is not Russian, nor have they provided it to the Iranians.

The reactor-grade uranium for Bushehr 1 (which goes into operation in October 2007.)

To date Russia has not provided any enriched uranium to Iran. This article is rampant with speculation.

This exemption will allow Iran to convert the lightly-enriched fuel in the light-water nuclear reactor into weapon-grade 235. Your concern is Russia selling enriched uranium to Iran so they can make a nuclear bomb, isn't it?

Uranium in its natural state as mined in Iran is .0533%. To use uranium in a light water reactor it has to be enriched to 4 or 5%. Uranium for weapon's grade has to be enriched to 95%. It only follows that if your concern is Iran enriching the Russian uranium from 5% to 95%, then they certainly could enrich it to 5% on their own. However, you have already considered that, haven't you?

The real concern is the heavy water reactor Iran has built on their own at Arak. The EU has offered to give Iran two light water reactors if they will dismantle the heavy water reactor. The US has backed the EU's offer.

Somebody once again trying to give the Russian's a bad name, the world knows the Russians would never ever SELL such a thing to anybody. Oil and gas are the only commodities available for speculation, why on earth would they want Iran to be 'equalized'. (Extreme sarcasm.)

"This article is rampant with speculation."

OF course - why rush to conclusions. After all,
Russia killed 100 million in the last century and we have taken our time getting ready for the FIRST PROSECUTION!

Get the Kremlin NOW!! Get the Islamo Fascists now - what ever it takes to bring back $10 oil NOW.

Thanks to Putin's nuclear 'advisor's' soon jihadist exporting Iran will have the bomb, and unless prevented, will use it.

Evil greets evil

Iran is not our only, or even our most dangerous, national security problem. We are quite literally being outfoxed, isolated, and, to some extent, surrounded. We haven't seen Communist/Radical revolution leap-frogging from one nation to another like this since the early days of the Cold War. We had them contained, World Revolution was brought to a standstill, but then Nixon went to Red China and Communism "collapsed" and the whole process has started over again...except this time, Red China and Russia are more powerful than ever before, and have the benefit of being treated with respect(!!!) by the USA and our major trading partners/allies. The only solution is to cut off all aid and trade with Red China/Russia, and go back to building an alliance that is dedicted to the same (plus containment). Barring that, the Revolution will spread, and WWIII will be a foregone conlusion IMO. Except this time they will first try to weaken us with thousands of cuts, there will be plenty of enemies to our south, newly emboldened enemies in the Middle East, and, as our debt-ridden economy craters, even our allies will probably want to sit this one out until they can clearly see who will come out the victor and/or are absolutely forced to choose sides. We need another Reagan at home, a couple of Thatchers in Europe, and dozens of Chiang Kai-shecks and Pinochets globally, in order for the current threats to unwind into what for us would be a satisfactory conclusion IMO.

I very much agree. The international situation is extremely dangerous and the US as well as europe were not aware of it.
A former russian spy was murdered in london, with a radiation substance.
Thats the first time ever such event does happen.

From the guardian

A senior source at the United Nations nuclear inspectorate, the International Atomic Energy Agency, told The Observer he had no doubt that the killing of Litvinenko was an 'organised operation' which bore all the hallmarks of a foreign intelligence agency. The expert in radioactive materials said the ability to obtain polonium 210 and the knowledge needed to use it to kill Litvinenko meant that the attack could not have been carried out by a 'lone assassin'.

End of quote.

Some doubt putin would dare to make such a bold move.
Look at what did happen in 99
The russian secret services did blow up russian buildings with people inside.

A Bloody September
In September 1999, a series of middle-of-the-night explosions shook Russian cities destroying several apartment blocks. More than 300 people died as they slept. The attacks, attributed to Chechen separatists, boosted the popularity of the hawkish would-be President Vladimir Putin. Then, a strange thing happened. A bomb was defused by the local police, and the trail of evidence led to the door of the FSB, the secret service. The FSB was forced to admit "an ill-conceived exercise", which was remarkably similar to the earlier explosions.

Putin is a extremely dangerous man with no respect for life, not even the life of his fellow russian citizens.

Bush did not realize that.

Actually he believes he can trust Putin.
