They're (politicians and political hacks) folding like a house of cards only because the media says Iraq is a disaster.
Then you get politicians with alleged bright ideas like forming a "study group" because they think they know more than the commanders on the ground.
General Westmoreland's biggest chip on his shoulder during the Vietnam War was politicians thinking they knew more than he did.
You are SO right...and that is why I have had my antennae out for a long time.
I know what happened that caused the end of the Vietnam war...as you do...and I think I may have even posted here at some point, that I would do anything in my power not to let that happen again.
If that just means calling out our Congress and telling them to get out of the military's way...and not wanting them to micromanage a war I will.
I have no idea how much the Salon story is right or not...but, I say the whole situation is rotten.
FGS....the TERRORISTS know our history better than some of our Congresscritters!!! They KNOW what will get Washington all shaking in their plush offices...
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRrr
It is important that Iran is also a multinational state, a fact that is never reported on. Given the historical antagonism between Arabs and Persians, between the Turks and the Persians, the quwstion is to what extent religion is the critical matter, whether it is binding enough to hold the state together.
General Abizaid was visibly disturbed by the panicy reaction of the panel. How soft, how naive, how cynical, how craven they are.
We should have got Westmoreland out of there sooner. Abrams had a better handle on matters, but you are right that the politicians got almost nothing right. The worst was Johnson, who was a great bowl of jelly.
Good point..
It WAS Abizaid...who is military...that said that the mood (he used a different word) in Washington is worse than Iraq.
Glad you remembered that...thanks.
I was very disturbed by the panel's lack of nerve. They have the towell firmly in hand ready to throw it in.
I take back everything nice I said about the Secretary of State.
Yes...they do...and this is while the GOP is STILL in the majority!
Just wait until January, there will be a BUNCH of these hearings...and the DEMS will come out firing...and instead of fighting the WAR....Abizaid and Casey and others will be tied up listening to the Congresscritters bloviate.
If that is true, Congressman Wolf has my respect and support. It can be real tough to determine the facts on the ground when everyone knows the boss is coming for an inspection.
Since Condi has been moonlighting lately as Fatah Spokesperson, this is not really surprising.
That is a most interesting analysis.
Thanks for finding and linking these, BSF.
Looking at the names in ISG, I can't help but wonder if the CFR or other Internationalist/One Worlder groups aren't doing things publicly to rein in Bush/Cheney/Rummy.
They need to get a grip on things if they are going to get their girl in for '08 (whether that is Hillary, Condi, Nancy, Kay or someone else).
This could be a public smack because they are getting no where with behind the scenes nudging.
People who work behind the scenes, people whose names and faces we don't know, and never will.
You're quite welcome. :)
Two officials involved in setting up the study group, who were granted anonymity because they did not want to be associated with criticism of Ms. Rice, said she resisted it and was unimpressed with its potential to come up with alternatives to what the administration had already been doing.
But Sean McCormack, the State Department spokesman, said Ms. Rice was enthusiastic and is "going to make sure that the State Department provides everything they need to complete their work."
The Iraq Study Group is receiving funds from Congress with the help of Mr. Wolf, who is chairman of the appropriations subcommittee in the House that controls the budget of the State Department. The group has several subgroups, including a set of retired military commanders.
