CAPITOL HILL (AP) - House Democrats are targeting (b) billions of dollars in oil company tax breaks for quick repeal next year.
But hot-button issues such as a tax on the oil industry's windfall profits or sharp increases in automobile fuel economy are not expected to gain much ground given the narrow Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.
For the most part, the tax benefits due for quick review are ones that lawmakers talked of repealing this year when summer fuel prices soared and oil companies took huge profits.

This also makes for nice wedge issues. The Democrats have been patting themselves on the back for taking rad-state seats away from Republicans. Once they start passing their preferred Stalinist legislation, all of those seats will disappear for a generation.

Good point. Oil industry taxation could be a good wedge issue to use to win back congrssional seats in oil producing states, and there are more of those states than people realize. Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Kansas, for example, produce a significant amount of oil and gas, and California is still a major oil producer.
The President needs to be very explicit in framing this argument this way. This isn't about tax breaks for the oil industry. This is about expanding our sorely lacking domestic capacity for refining oil, which is a big contributer to the price surges when things like Katrina happen.
People will oppose "tax breaks for the oil companies." But they will support government policy meant to build new refineries and lower gas prices.
The President needs to simply ask why the Democrats think the American people should pay more for gasoline. He can even put forward that there are valid policy reasons to do so, such as cutting down on driving and pollution. Ask the Dhimmicrats if that is what they want, to force all Americans to start riding bicycles for the common good. There will be enough moonbats who will rise to the bait to make the charge stick.

The President should also do something that I have called for before:
A call to action for the USA to become energy independent within 10 years. Similar to JFK's call to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.
When President Bush last year announced the ambitious plan to put a man on Mars, it basically flopped with the American public. Very bad timing.
But, a call to become energy independent within 10 years? Now that is something every single American can relate to.

Well put -- they will tax EVERYTHING between now and 2008 that they THINK cannot hurt the "useful idiot vote". Of course, as always, with NO REGARD for the damage this will do to our weak position on energy independence from the ME.
These Marxist morons are at it already --- TAX FOR POWER AND CONTROL, SPEND FOR POWER AND CONTROL. Karl Marx would be proud of these flaming leftists.
The coalition between big oil, big ethanol and big auto and the government has long-since ceased to be helpful, just as the railroads and then steel overdid it. But there is no sign so far that the Democrats will do anything effective about it. Frankly, if they would do something effective, we'd be all for it, but there is absolutely no sign that our "energy policy" will cease to subsidize the problem rather than solving it.
The President should do no such thing. He should voice his objections, yes, but he should not give the Democrats an out to criticize (and the GOP) when oil prices rise again, as they inevitably will (given demand). "The people have spoken", and they deserve all the $4.00+ a gallon gas they're going to get from a Democrat Congress. Sadly, it's the only way people are going to learn what they bought into on election day '06.
I hope I'm wrong, buy I imagine dubya will be magnamimous and give the rats everything they want...including 20 to 30 million new rat voters that can't speak english.

Having been around lots of startups, what liberals usually miss is that businesses do throw money around, hopefully in a focused attempt to drive some key factor to completion (sales, production startup, etc.). The reality is overall that margins are rarely gargantuan, and a lot of things fail even when well planned. That tax rate can be the kiss of death to the company margin, even though the markup on the product looks huge at 100%
Yeah, we should not grant citizenship to all the illegal immigrants because there is no need to do so and if they are all allowed to vote soon then Republican voters are going to be outnumbered at the polls, at that could cause big problems for our country. These immigrants should be allowed to enter a guest worker program but should not be given citizenship and voting rights. That's a very bad idea; there are too many people voting already who have so little knowledge and understanding of the issues on which they're voting.
The Dhimmicrats are itching to do two things. In the short term, tax the bejeebers out of the oil industry to fill the pork barrel.
Gotta remember their ranks are crawling with dirt-worshippers and card-carrying Socialists, too.
In the longer run, they want the price up. Way up.
They want gasoline so bloody expensive there will be an outcry by John Q. Nitwit to nationalize the oil industry.
If they are successful of course, if you thought three bucks per gallon was expensive, you ain't seen nothing yet. (If you can find any).
