Radio Legend (Paul Harvey) Lets Anti-Hunting Colors Fly High

Radio Legend Lets Anti-Hunting Colors Fly High- (11/17) National Join our e-mail alert list

One of America’s most well-known radio commentators earlier this week showed his anti-hunting colors in a nationally broadcast message.

On Nov. 13, syndicated broadcaster Paul Harvey’s noon report announced how ‘thankful’ Michigan doves are that voters rejected the state’s dove hunting initiative. He proudly rattled off a number of other ballot issue campaigns to which the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has contributed in recent years, including efforts to ban trapping and bear hunting. Harvey concluded by praising the organization’s new-found political prowess, saying HSUS “has never had such clout on the Hill.”

Obviously, Paul Harvey is entitled to his opinion. In fact, it’s his job. However, the advocacy of an agenda that seeks to destroy the lifestyle and livelihoods of millions of Americans will elicit responses.

“America’s sportsmen do not stand idle when the faction that is trying to eliminate hunting, fishing and trapping is handed credibility,” said Bud Pidgeon, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance president. “Paul Harvey’s support and recognition of the animal rights movement, and HSUS specifically, is a blow to the pro-hunting movement and deserves to be addressed.”

This is not the first time Harvey has used his radio segment as a soapbox for his animal rights viewpoint. He has praised People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals leader Ingrid Newkirk “for her dedication and commitment towards making planet earth a better place for animals.” He made these glowing comments about a woman who hopes hoof-and-mouth disease will come to America!

Take Action! Sportsmen are urged to express their dissatisfaction with Paul Harvey’s controversial radio segment. Let radio stations that air Paul Harvey’s program know that you object to his extremely controversial views on animal rights.

Also, contact Paul Harvey sponsors and let them know that you object to their support of a program that acts as a mouthpiece for the anti-hunting movement.

Doves are tastey. There are lots of ways to cook them.

Not being a hunter, I need instructions on how to "field strip" them; we have zillions of them here in the desert, and whenever I hear a thump in our back glass, I'm likely to find another that's flown into the window and snapped it's little neck.

Amen. I would like to go a little further than that, but I will refrain.

Is this the son? I thought Paul Harvey stroked out years ago?

Dad reads the copy, his son writes it.

"But I do enjoy eating them."

One of the first things my husband made for me was a squab dish. Yum! (He was a professional chef at the time, but anyone that can follow a recipe can handle it.)

We need to ping that Carlo guy for some recipes!

(OT: Went to a craft show with MIL this morning. We found these awsome fishing lures for our menfolk. They're a treble hook, a silver Cabela's spinner, and a Leinie's beer bottle cap! The guy swore up and down they've caught him lots of fish.)

I wasn't aware that Harvey had died, and this may be his son.

I do know that the senior Harvey's wife was on the HSUS board at one time, and the HSUS wants to end medical research on animals. Do you know anybody with heart disease, diabetes, birth defects, etc., that has benefitted from such research?

There is a LOT of info out there on the HSUS, proof of what they do and they don't do with the tax free millions they raise from unsuspectng people who think they are helping animals.

Do you eat meat? What is the difference between shooting a dove or raising a chicken in a slaughterhouse to eat, other than you let somebody else kill your meat for you. At least the dove lived in a natural environment before somebody killed it. Not so for the chicken.

As for him expressing his opinion, that is fine. I just don't beleive the "rest of the story" is being told, and never will be. I used to enjoy his reports but not now, not knowing what I do.

I wouldn't shoot an animal for the fun of it, so I agree with what you are saying.

Unfortunately, the HSUS spends tons of money trying to outlaw the legal hunting of these, and all other species. So they are in effect, telling others they can't shoot and eat doves.

Whether I agree with what he says or not is irrelevant. It's his personal commentary program, end of story.

I've far better things to do than find things to be offended about.

I love garage sales and flea markets for finding fishing tackle. LOL, I'd love to see one of those lures.

At a conference I went to in October I bought (during an auction) a George Varney engraved handcrafted bamboo fly rod for $35. Last I checked it was worth no less than $350.

I listen to Paul Harvey every day. I don't expect to agree with him all of the time, and I don't want to. If I only listened to people I agreed with, I'd probably never learn anything.

Great find! I've got all of my Grandpa's old fishing gear wrapped up and increasing in value as I type. :)

...right to blow small creatures out the sky for sport.

Don't knock it till you tried it. What's the sport in hiring an exterminator to control roaches when you could stomp on them one at a time? Enjoy your chicken. They are all God's creatures. Think about that the next time a bug splats on your windshield. Hunting can be a great sport for all ages and genders.

Paul Harvey ought to go out and thank every hunter he sees. Does he have any idea how dangerous it would be for his old a** to totter across the parking lot if mastadons and sabretooth tigers were rampaging through it??? He can thank hunters for that.

I suspect nature will silence Mr. Harvey long before any opposition to his political stances. I have enjoyed his broadcasts and unique take on the news for years. I will graciously allow him one issue to separate us.

When Harvey isn't busy bashing the President and our military he's bashing the Bill of Rights......who'd a thunk it. Senile old fool. The islamics got him suspended a couple of years ago and now he's afraid of his shadow, lest he offend the terrorists.

He's there to hawk products, nothing more.

You have an interesting situation - sort of like getting manna from heaven!

Here's my suggestion. Almost all the usable meat on a dove is in the breast. You can pick the feathers off and gut the whole bird just like a chicken, but it's extremely time consuming and the amount of extra meat you'd get is negligible. Just insert your fingertip under the breastbone where it covers the abdomen and pop or rip the whole breast off the carcass. You can then easily clean the remaining skin and feathers off the breast.

Since you're only getting a bird every now and then, simply save each cleaned dove breast in a ziplock freezer bag until you have enough for a meal. When you have a sufficient number, thaw and marinate them for about an hour in your favorite marinade (zesty italian dressing is very good), then wrap each breast with a strip of bacon, place on skewers and grill quickly over medium-hot charcoal. Yum! Endless variations of this recipe are possible limited only by your imagination.
