JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Miss Israel has been given permission not to carry her assault rifle during service in the Israeli army because she says it bruises her legs.

The article only says she doesn't have to carry her assault rifle. She probably carries a smaller weapon. In any event, I doubt that this young woman will be doing any job in the IDF that isn't located in a nice, secure office or base somewhere.

I'd vote for making her carry the rifle, her gams aren't that great.

But maybe they can find an UZI for her. It's short enough it shouldn't bother her legs, and is fine for a rear area support type anyway. Or a handgun.

Not sure about IDR regs, but, a handgun shouldn't be out of the question unless it breaks a nail. Regardless, I understand the brass's decision to protect their assets as best as possible.

There is one less IDF troop in the field.

Females in the IDF generally aren't "in the field" anyway. They're in the rear, serving the gear, or running com centers, analyzing intelligence, and so forth. A handgun is really plenty for them, but an UZI would be better, or maybe she can buy herself an FN P-90. It would be perfect for her needs, and the needs of the other ladies of the IDF too.

Of course, there is some evidence that they are fools since they're eager to go blow themselves up for fat mullahs. And, in the early stages of the Iraq war, some Iraqis believed the sunglasses soldiers wore allowed them to see through women's clothing. Maybe the majority of them are fools.

If we had compulsory military service as Israel does, a lot of women probably wouldn't be able to hack a lot of the jobs that volunteer women can do. Since Israel has a draft, I imagine that the IDF makes any number of allowances for people when necessary.
