Latin America is traditionally seen as a continent set apart from colonial projects elsewhere, the outcome of its long experience of settlement since the 16th century. Yet it truly belongs in the history of the global expansion of white-settler populations from Europe in the more recent period. Today's elites are largely the product of the immigrant European culture that has developed during the two centuries since independence.

The writer lost me by the time he got to Allende, a tool of the Copper Miner's Union (a wholly owned Commie subsidiary of the Sovet Union), and suggested he had some sort of interest in the more indigenous people in Chile.

BTW, almost everybody in Chile is descended from European and Indian people ~ virtually the opposite of neighboring Argentina where almost nobody is descended from any Indian ~ that population having been essentially exterminated.

In Venezuela, elections in December will produce another win for Hugo Chávez, a man of black and Indian origin. Much of the virulent dislike shown towards him by the opposition has been clearly motivated by race hatred, and similar hatred was aroused the 1970s towards Salvador Allende in Chile and Juan Perón in Argentina.

Uh - no. The "virulent dislike" of Chávez is motivated by the fact that he's a two bit thug dictator nutcase who fancies himself as sharing the stage with the world's big boys.

Fidel Castro is also a white man, with no Indian ancestry. I believe the same can be said for Ché Guevara.

Back during the 2006 election campaign, I took part in a pro-Republican street rally during which I encountered a young man apparently of South American Indian extraction who wore a Ché Guevara t-shirt. Between shouts of "Bush is a Nazi," he was yelling at the mostly white Republican demonstrators to go back to Europe. I yelled back at him, "Viva, Barrientos!" [Bolivian president René Barrientos Ortuño had Guevara hunted down and killed] and "Viva, Pinochet!" [Former Chilean president Augusto Pinochet Ugarte remains the bête noir of the international left], but I don't think he even understood who these people were.

Well, the European elite is a BIG problem in Latin American countries. The problem is the alternative, Hugo Chavez bobbleshead clones. Both groups are blood-suckers. Neither have the intellectual tools nor the desire to create a wealth-producing economy.

Former Spanish colonies will continue to be basket-cases for decades, maybe centuries.
