Contractors' Convoy Was Ambushed, Military Officials Say
WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2006 Four Americans are believed to be among 14 people kidnapped in an ambush of a convoy of contractors in Iraq near the city of Nasariyah, defense officials tell ABC News.
The incident took place this afternoon in a normally peaceful part of southern Iraq. A convoy run by a Kuwaiti-based company called Crescent Security Group was driving from near the Kuwaiti border to an Italian base near the City of Nasariyah.
Early in the trip, the convoy stopped at what looked like an Iraqi police checkpoint, military officials said. Initial reports say 19 trucks were seized and approximately 14 people, including four Americans detained.
There is still a great deal of confusion about whether the checkpoint was operated by real Iraqi police or by a Shiia militia, the officials said.
Nasariyah is the same place where Jessica Lynch was kidnapped in an ambush of the 507th Maintenance Company in March 2003.
You ok?
Iran has had a previous success with taking Americans hostage.
19 trucks and only 14 people kidnapped? Sounds like a setup.
This is Nancy Pelosi's fault. Oh thats right I can't start that yet....
Prayers Up...
Every American in Iraq should have a homing beacon embedded under their skin.
It must be quite a complicated setup, and the question is who is making this move. Maybe SICRI - the Iranian backed Shia militia which is part of the Maliki govt. Maliki is as weak as ... as anything (I had better not say more than that) and this may be a move for escalation in southern Iraq, where particular forces want to take over.
Or maybe it is some wild card element in the milias ... I don't know. Iraq is such a mess.
This is the part that sucks trying to make 150K per year over there ...
Yes indeed. Talk about earning money the hard way ... On a documenary about Iraqi police, being trained in Jordan, several were interviewed. They said it was a very risky job, and they knew they would probably be killed. "But we must sacrifice ourselves for the sake of our families", they said. They were very poor men, not young, and looked sad. They were not doing it for any grand purpose, just to have money so their families could live.
Pelosi's fault.
;)
Please let this be a wrong report.
This confusion issue must be resolved. If anyone, police uniform or terrorist uniform draws weapons and orders anyone to be handcuffed or to get into a vehicle or even to go outdoors, the response should be fight to the death.
The confusion issue also applies to businesses and bakeries. Bakers should be armed and if a stranger come in they should draw and be prepared to fight to the death.
That was covered in depth on FR two years ago. The only solution is for everybody to be armed and if armed men show up to assume it is a fight to the death. What to do about vest bombs and exploding vehicles and land mines is a problem, but it ought to be possible to go through neighborhoods house by house and find some of these things in preparation.
Every American in Iraq should have a ticket home.....
Whatever it takes is what is needed, even if it means leveling a score of cities and wiping them out to the last man.
On Thursday, a senior Defense official said Abizaids comments on troop levels stand, but the extra Marines are needed to deal with an immediate security concern.
