British intelligence officials believe that al-Qaida is determined to attack the UK with a nuclear weapon, it emerged yesterday. The announcement, from an officially organised Foreign Office counter-terrorism briefing for the media, was the latest in a series of bleak assessments by senior officials and ministers about the terrorist threat facing Britain.
UK officials have detected "an awful lot of chatter" on jihadi websites expressing the desire to acquire chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapons....
The warning comes after a speech last week by the foreign secretary, Margaret Beckett, on the terrorist threat facing the UK, and a rare public outing for Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, the head of MI5, who warned that there were at least 30 active plots to attack Britain.
With new counter-terrorism measures to be unveiled in tomorrow's Queen's speech, the weekend saw Gordon Brown back an extension to the time for which terrorism suspects can be held without charge, beyond the current 28 days....
For al-Qaida and jihadis, a devastating nuclear attack on Britain, not just the use of a "dirty bomb', would be part of the desire and agenda to cripple the west, sources said....
The network of the rogue Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, which is feared to have sold nuclear technology to Libya, Iran and North Korea, was broken up three years ago, but there are fears that other illegal networks may exist.
British counter terrorism officials believe plots they have thwarted and plots they claim are being hatched have strong links to Pakistan. They say hundreds of Britons travelled in the past year to Pakistan for terrorism activity, including training in camps and acting as couriers for messages. Officials also believe Britons are taking cash to terrorists in Pakistan.

Is it safe to panic?
If it was me in charge, I would right now tell Iran, syria, North Korea that if one type of nuke, dirty or otherwise goes off in USA or UK or Aus, I would issues orders that those aforementioned countries get attacked with Nuke, regardless of if they had anything to do with the attack or not.
This should apply pressure to terrorist groups by those countries.
Other than that, I dont know what to do.
I don`t know, but Repubs better stop f-in` around because here in New York, this witch is in overdrive for POTUS, just salivating and I still have no idea who is going to take her on. My dream candidate would be Ann Coulter, but the Repubs would never let her run, but I know just ONE debate with her and Hellary would absolutely destroy Hellary and the Clinton disease for all enternity. Maybe Ann can run just to debate and destroy the witch, then when the smoke clears bring in some RINO that is more palatable Repub party and the masses. Oh man, but one can only dream if Ann was the primo candidate.
Ask ourselves what in the world we could have done to so anger the muslim world. Have several senate hearings chaired by Durbin to blame the Bush Administration, and promise to fund after school basketball leagues for underprivilidged muslims in Teran.
Then require all americans to attend muslim diversity training, and start printing our street signs in arabic and english. And provide government funding for a few all arabic cable channels. :)
Don't get me wrong...I adore Ann Coulter and I have ALL of her books. But she is a commentator that polarizes folks as much as Hillary does or worse. She has no experience and the job of POTUS calls for a LOT of experience in government and in politics (not just talking about politics...but experience in the process), not acerbic wit.
A more realistic candidate is going to be Condi Rice, which plays the political race card in all the GOOD ways guaranteed to create a SCHISM in the Dems maybe good enough to finally finish them off. Condi is a "shoo in" because she holds enough of the views to appeal to the center.
A more hard to the right candidate like Brownback and Tancredo could still win if they don't try to have everything all ways and pull a Kerry. Conservative ideas win when they are presented in an unwavering fashion. These ideas also have to be couched in terms that won't make Americans feel uncomfortable in offering support. That might be a problem with some of these folks who tend to roar around like the proverbial "Bull in the China Shop."
Yeah, you are right about Ann, but it is still a dream if just to see her debate the Hellary Monster. Condi would be an awesome candidate but I highly doubt she is going to run, she just seems very against it.
Oh man, she would just make the ultimate candidate, can you imagine? Not only the first female President, but also the first African American President. It would drive liberals up the freggin` wall, they wouldn`t know what to say, like you said it would probably finish them off.

If the mohammacidal maniacs ever go nuclear, I think that the Western World will take the steps necessary to win. We can only win by inflicting enough civilian casualties that muslims realize that it is time to clean their own house. Although France will be pulling their white flags out and waving them frantically, the U.S., Britain, Poland, Australia and the rest of the sensible world will be ready to stand and fight.
If she is even remotely interested it only makes sense to pretend she's utterly NOT. Otherwise the media and the opposition would be planning and researching for the battle. Why give out useful intell before you have to show your cards?
Here's one potential scenario that could still play out: After the first of the year, 2007, Cheney resigns citing "ongoing health problems" -- no lie there -- and Condi is nominated as the VP. That gives her incumbency status and the automatic lead in any race. She gets several months to take on a higher vis role, with assignments that might wander into the realm of actual decision making....something beyond the normal doldrums accorded the VP.
Suddenly Condi is accorded super Rock Star status...no longer a policy wonk....very tough for the RATs to assail without appearing overtly racist by their own already fragmented base......
Unfortunately, the west will wait for the mushroom cloud before they sense danger.
