Romney will be bagged by the press for the Olympic bribes at SLC just as McCain will get smashed for his role in the Keating 5 S&L scandal.
Might as well pick someone else if you want to win.
If you just want a placeholder for 2008 to lose, then McCain and Romney will easily fit the bill.
Romney came in and cleaned up a corrupt organization; there's no way they can credibly pin that corruption on him. There's a difference between stretching the truth (such as in the Foley incident), something the media can do very well, and turning it around completely, something that usually discredits the accusing party.
Romney came in after the scandal broke and cleaned things up. He turned what could, easily, have been a disaster into a very successful Olympics. I repeat he had zero involvement in the bribe stuff and was brought in to clean house and turn the operation around. And he did.
The MSM would actually avoid that story (goes against the Dim 'Republicans are corrupt' line).
