Working in the writing center today has made me extremely angry at the Democrats. I have just worked with a couple of black girls who really struggled at writing. They were intelligent but lacked basic writing skills leading me to believe that their schools never gave them the tools they need. I started thinking about how these girls went through primary school during the Clinton years--the years of supposed improvement in our schools. All Clinton did was to keep schools from being held accountable for anything. All he ever talked about was how much he "cared" about the children. Schools administrators hate Bush and Republicans because they make schools accountable for their failures.
Teachers should be able to write a sentence themselves before teaching kids how to do it. What good does a good grade do a student if their teacher is incompetent? At least standardized tests give us some sense of what kids actually know. I don't think kids should be punished for their standardized test scores, but their schools should be if too many of their kids are failing. Educators seem to hate republicans because they dare to make sure that schools are doing their jobs.
I get to see the results of Clinton's policies everyday in these students and it makes me sick!
Also believe this is a perfect example of why we cannot allow a Democrat to get back in the White House. We have to have accountability in our schools for the sake of the students. This is a perfect example of Dems being for the children but not expecting anything out of those students. Sad commentary on the Clinton years and their focus on education which was a dismal failure. They talked the talked but never walked the walk.
I will add union teachers and not being able to fire them when their students don't perform as part of the problem.
Thought you would find this interesting!
Had they been white girls would you have mentioned their color?
That's a good point.
He also threw more federal money to the NEA so in turn they could donate to his campaigns
Where I come from .. its called money laundry .. though I'm sure the Dems have a fancier name for it
I didn't write it. And yes it probably would have been mentioned.
While the Democrats bear plenty of blame for the abysmal state of our government schools, where has been the impetus for change on the other side of the aisle? Or did I just miss the article about the Department of Education being disbanded?
And more importantly, where are the parents in this equation? Home education is a viable option as are private schools. Yet the majority of parents elect to send their children to the government schools. The end result of those decisions are predictable.
Absolutely. We the taxpayers are paying the educators to spread their filth.
I found it interesting that he tied it back to the Clinton years when all we heard was it was for the children.
I forgot about that! He did throw money at them and it came back to him.
I think Clinton called it "Ensuring our children's future".
I am all in favor of disbanding the Department of Education and returning education to the states.
My three kids all went to public schools and they were good public schools because when we were transferred the #1 priority of where we lived was the school system. I also tutored on a volunteer basis in the elementary schools when my kids were in school. I was a very involved parent and they all three received an excellent education.
Parental involvement is the #1 item that will make schools better IMHO.
Congrats on the Grad Student.....
I'm not sure what the answer is but certainly part of it lies in getting the basic foundation while in secondary schools. Outside of traditional schooling I believe computers, text messaging, instant communications, slang, etc have all been contributors to the demise in our ability to use the written word in its proper sense.
My kids have been lucky because most of their teachers were not members of NEA. I don't think any of my kids history teachers were liberal. The only liberal I can remember in the various schools was my daughter's Algebra II teacher and he was a nutcase. Most of their teachers I couldn't have told you if they were liberal or conservative unless I knew them from outside the school.
Thanks!
My youngest daughter in first grade was subjected to that stupid reading to write a MA program from Dukakis. It was horrible as they were to use a computer to write and spelling didn't count. They would read the sentence even though you couldn't tell what it said. In Boerne we had a chance to opt out for our kids and I opted out so fast the principal called to ask me why and I told him you have enough trouble getting kids to spell words correctly without encouraging them to put anything on a piece of paper and read it like they know what it says. Next year, they cancelled the program since I was not the only parent got up in arms. Why a TX school put a MA program in is beyond me.
True! It is sad that a high school graduate gets into the University and cannot write.
My History teacher was a Vietnam Vet. He was crazier than a loon. My brother (a lifelong war buff) joked that he probably got doused with agent orange while prowling around in the jungles.
But this isn't a new phenomenon; sadly, it's been going on for many decades.
LOL! My son had a geography teacher who was a retired Marine. Probably the hardest class he ever had. They learned where every small country was in the world. He was glad to just pass the class!
