Blacks and hispanics from the inner city schools and whites from rural areas of SE OK. He very seldom gets anyone from Norman and towns surrounding OKC and towns surrounding Tulsa unless they are there because they want an 'A' on their papers.

Probably a good 85 - 90% of students he sees in the Writing Center come from those inner city schools which shows that money thrown at a school doesn't do a lot for students because they still have trouble writing. It is a travesty that these young people attend school for 13 years and cannot write a paper that makes sense.

I have read some of his papers from his Comp classes and find it hard to believe these kids graduated from high school -- incomplete sentences, spelling mistakes, lack of noun and verb in the sentence structure, etc. He told me the writing center papers are much worse.

All I heard about are people saying we need to increase math scores but what we need to take a look at and increase IMHO are the reading and writing skills that are necessary in almost every discipline. You could get into OU with a 19 in reading/writing on the ACT and a 24 in math when my daughter applied. She had a 28 in reading/writing and a 23 in math and they said they would admit her provisionally because of her math score because she might not do well in college. She went to the junior college for a year and took all the math that was required. She has a 3.7 GPA and will graduate in the spring from OU. If she was a minority, she would have been admitted with no problem because they fall in a different category, but she would have had trouble with the math courses with a lot less help then you get at the junior college.

"Teachers should be able to write a sentence themselves before teaching kids how to do it."

You're asking far too much. Can't we all just get along and be happy?

"YES! Absolutely. A nice dose of common sense there!"

SHHHHHH!!!! Don't let the howlers hear you say that! I also happen to be one of those "horrible and loathsome" Democrats. ;-)

Thanks for the ping. I have been angry at Democommiecrats all day too but for different reasons. The fools that should know better but who "think" our nation is going to "improve" now that the Republicans are out of "power" in Congress have damned this country to hell.....and the education "system" in this country is just one of the destructions that they have wrought. By the time the damage has been done - more in education and more in the disappearance of the middle class as the commies work hard to redistribute as much income as possible to the "poor" and their friendly "elitists" in power - it will be too late to save this country again. And, yes, I also blame the Republicans who "stayed home". But the real destroyers are the communists who are now in power and are on their vicious path to destroy us. So, I see your anger and raise you one.

The idea that the President of the United States, regardless of party, is somehow responsible for the "failure of education" is the real shame here. The feds should be out of the school system altogether.

I just did a rant on another thread about the people on here that routinely use the word RINO to trash Republicans they don't agree with when I bet most of them have been part of the stay it home my way or no way crowd. I am so tired of pandering to these pseudo Republicans that I could scream. I think it is time for new coalitions to form or we will not take the White House. Whatever happened to just plain conservatives who are for strong defense, smaller government, less taxes, strict constitutionalist judges, and values to include our elected officials.

I am tired of social issues being the only reason that someone votes for a candidate. I want a strong leader that will win and stand up to terrorist and believes education for one thing belongs at the state level. I am frankly tired of pandering to the religious right when they stab us in the back like they did again this election.

It is going to be a long two years and if we cannot keep the WH in 2008, I fear what will happen, but too many Freepers put their social issues ahead of what is good for the entire Nation.

Sorry for the rant!

Couldn't agree more -- federal government has no business being in the education business.

I have seen much the same problem in the basic sciences. The school systems have neglected science and math education for many of the students. When the students arrive at institutions of higher education, they really struggle with some of the required science courses.

There has also been a problem with parents failing to encourage their children to obtain an training in basic science. The attitude seems to be, the student will graduate to become a lawyer, secretary, nurse, psychologist, physician, dentist, etc.; then why does the student need to know physics, chemistry, etc.

It is really unfair to the students.

Thanks for the kind words.

I like Zell, but my personal politics are more conservative than his. Particularly when it comes to things like education.

Back before the 1930's, the Democratic party had distinct northern and southern constituencies with very different ideologies. I think that's re-emerging to a certain extent. Which is a good thing, because conservatives might start finding themselves with a couple of conservative choices on the ballot. That will be a marked difference from what we've been getting for the last decade or so, which has been a poor choice between two shades of socialism.

It's like the commercial for that lending company: when political parties compete for the conservative vote, conservatives win.

BTW, I'm a fan of James K. Polk as well. An underrated President in our history.

No problem with the rant.

Well - social issues are important. Immigration is important. But the survival of this nation as a free nation is more important than these. With the Demonazi's now in power in Congress for 2 years and with Hitlery poised to use that power base as a springboard for her seizure of power in 2008 in the Presidency, we are now facing the end of our nation as we know it. We are now plunging into the abyss. Social issues and all. It is just sickening.
